Sydus, Virgin Radio launch 3G radio service

The UK's Virgin Radio is to be the first station to become available globally via 3G phones.
The offering is to be delivered in partnership with Singapore-based music-to-mobile streaming solutions provider Sydus.

The development will make Virgin Radio accessible to listeners via their phone anywhere in the world.

The free software from Sydus, available for download from the Virgin website installs a small application on the user's mobile phone. Launching the application via the Virgin Radio logo on the handset gives access to the station, in stereo, via the mobile phone's headsets. Virgin Radio, the UK rock and pop station, will be the first available alongside the brand's two digital stations, Virgin Radio Classic Rock and Virgin Radio Groove.

The service works on selected 2.5G and 3G terminals. Currently there are 30 compatible handsets available.

The product from Sydus will currently be most attractive in mobile markets such as the US, India, Thailand, Singapore, China, Italy and Australia where service providers offer unlimited data bundles. Virgin Radio and Sydus are in discussions with network operators in the UK to encourage a move towards packaging greater data.

Although FM receivers have become fairly common on handsets, receiving radio via data stream will allow listeners to tune into Virgin Radio outside of the stations FM transmission area.

my bet is that the first network to open the whole lot up to allow this is going to be probably orange but you never know maybe 3 will pull their fingers out their arse, on the other hand you could patch the software in the nokia 6630 and get the full internet that way (saw it on the gadget show on channel5 lol)
