He was 84 and had led the world's one billion Catholics for 26 years.

The Vatican said the Pontiff died at 8.37pm BST, 9.37pm Rome time.

The Polish-born pontiff, who received the last rites on Thursday evening, suffered heart failure and shock during treatment for a urinary tract infection.

His health declined sharply when he developed a high fever brought on by the infection.

He initially responded well to anti-biotics but then his condition deteriorated further and the fever resurfaced on the morning of his death.

Although gravely ill a Vatican spokesman said John Paul was "lucid... and extraordinarily serene".

On Friday night a crowd of around 70,000 gathered in Rome's St Peter's Square to be close to the man who had been their spiritual guide since 1978.

All around the world Catholics offered prayers as concern grew for his health.

John Paul was taken to hospital twice last month with breathing problems, having earlier had a tube inserted in his throat.

He was last seen in public on Wednesday when he appeared briefly at his apartment window in St Peter's Square to bless thousands of pilgrims.

There were cheers from the gathered audience as he tried to speak to them, but his words were not audible

lol, can't believe this outpouring of grief for a man who was head of one of the most vile and reprehensible institutions the world has ever seen. This is an institution that has brought misery and suffering to 1000's over the years through their denial of simple human rights and covering up of centuries of sexual abuse by their own priests.

As organised religions go Roman Catholicism is among one of the most oppressive we've ever seen. And I won't even mention the vaticans implicit relationship with the Nazi's during WWII.

I don't wish death on anyone but lets get some perspective, while he did some good things, he and the catholic church has a lot to answer for.

As head of the Catholic Church the only thing he stood for was the control of people's lives through fear of the notion that you will be eternally damned unless you follow their antiquated and oppressive rules.

All the good the Catholic Church does is totally irrelevant because it comes with conditions attached, thus expanding the control they exert on the masses. It is simply wrong for any institution or group to have any say on how people lead their lives, we are human, if God does exist his greatest gift to us was free will, something that organised religion abhors.
