    Default Flash mob in Sheffield...

now, correct me if i'm wrong, but arent "Flash Mobs" supposed to be completely spontaneous (sp?) and free from mass planning etc in order to create more confusion and effect?

Well walking through meadowhall tonight I came across various camera crews and a couple of sets, and lots of annoying people thinking they are doing something new an interesting.

It turns out they were part of a "Flash Mob Opera" for bbc3 and will be shown tonight at 22:30 and Sat 9 Apr at 01:00.

Pity people were more interesting in looking at the psp I was carrying than the flash mobs.

The BBC has taken a fun idea and completely got the wrong end of the stick ruining it entirely.

I'm glad you brought this up or I was going to have to.

"Flash Mobs" supposed to be completely spontaneous (sp?) and free from mass planning etc in order to create more confusion and effect?
Exactly! Setting up an orchestra and film crew with months of planning in advance is about as far as you can get from a flash mob. It's not spontaneous and it's trying to impose an entirely different art form onto something that's just supposed to be fun!

Total trash if you ask me.

they had it on look north just before neighbours at lunch time and they were saying that people should come along and see it,

it looked like there'd been a shit load of planning going in to it, also i was in medowhall on monday (bought a d500) and they had big signs out telling people about the "flash mob" and big bbc3 signs up in the oasis

The phrase "No shit sherlock" springs to mind!

I mean are you really telling me that you would expect a BBC camera man to turn up at a random with his little portable video 8, in the blind hope that some artists + crowds + policing + planing permission would all just happen?

No, I'd expect them just not to do it in the first place... No wait, I mean I'd like them not to do it in the first place, I totally expect them to do it.

Planning months ahead, and performing an entire opera hardly constitutes a flashmob does it?

Yes - they did it at Paddington Station in London and it was superb. I'm far from an opera fan but it was compelling viewing, I'll look out for this one.

    Yeah, thats you alright!!

Don't you hate it when someone latches onto a good idea, then destroys it totally so they can make money out of it?

Problem is, this is happening everywhere and to everything.

For instance, the Reading Festival, is now properly known as "The Carling Weekend" at Reading.

    What the hell is next?
    Carling sponsor Reading,
    The BBC steals Flash Mobbing
My prediction is "The Maxi Tampon Glastonbury Festival" or maybe "Britain, Sponsored by Microsoft"
