Default okay how you do this? - REPLY

As the original thread seems to have been locked for some unknown reason I'll reply in this one.

First open up your picture in PS, in this case Spangles the clown.

Then select Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid Colour... to create a new layer filled with whatever colour you want, in this case black.

Then, in the layers palette, change the fill or opacity of that layer to acheive what you want. In this example I used a fill of 81%.

    Simple.

Indeed you can. Here's one using a radial layer mask.

There's normally a multitude of methods you can use in PS to acheive the same outcome, but I prefer the KISS method, keep it simple stupid.

Layer masks and gradient fills, oooh I see you've been reading up.

Question - if I had a pic that looks like the one above is there any way to reverse the process and lighten it ?

my brother had a load of holiday snaps that came out far to dark - wonder if there is a way to restore them ?

You've been taking pictures of Spangles the clown !

    But seriously.

You can lighten dark photo's to a certain degree, but it depends how badly they're underexposed as to how successful it will be.

Have you got any sort of imaging software, paint shop pro, photoshop etc ?

There's loads of different ways of doing it, you could use levels, curves, shadow/highlight etc but here's a fairly easy tutorial that might help:
