I am currently building an arcade cabinet, the plans are similar to 'Lusid's'. I got the MDF cut at B&Q. I must say the guy was great, he cut all the square bits he could (must have been 10 or 20 cuts in total on 4 sheets of mdf) even though they aren't obliged to. Put it on the backburner for the moment but if any body wants to buy one let me know as I'm selling it after I've used it for a bit.

Porthos, are you just building the cabinet, or are you doing the innards aswell? If so what are you planning to use?

i'm building one two but mine is going to be powerd by an XBOX, running the new MAME with virtual memory and also KawaX.
At the mo i'm just looking at the controlls. i'm either going to be canibalizing some standard XBOX arcade sticks, or i'm looking at buying a DIY arcade control kit from http://www.x-arcade.com/arcade_parts.shtml , then using an adaptor from the same site i can link them up to the XBOX.
i'll be taking a look at the XBOX arcade sticks first cos they are a lot cheaper.

i'm looking at using Lusid's plans too. but maybe changing the control pannel. it's a little big for my needs.

The lot, with a PC inside. Should have a few 'nifty' features, at least one of which I know hasn't been in any that are online but I can't say much at the mo.

It won't have foot pedals or a steering wheel (although I think many people have made these). I don't like the 'all-in-one' machines with all controls etc. as they feel less authentic.

today was the day i was going to start building it.
woke up earlyish and went to MKM to get some 3/4" MDF (OH MY GOD IT's HEAVY) and some 2by4 for supports
then drove to my parents for about lunch time.. thank god for dads with a power tool fetish ..

my dad was keen to help and i was keen to let him so we soon had the first side marked up and cut out with the circular saw.. i then stood it up to make sure i was happy with the shape and we actually did take a chunk off the top cos i thought it looked too big.

using the first side as a template i marked up the second side and cut it out. my dad had to go out then so i did most of the rest by my self.

cutting this stuff is real nasty, you can see how dusty it is from the photos.. it's also carcinogenic so one of these is essential!!

after i'd cut all the panels out it was time to add the supports to the sides. these were all glued and screwed, and gave me somthing to fasten the other panels to.

then i fastened the back panels on so it could stand by it's self, and it started to take shape.
some of the panels needed trimming down a little but that was no big problem.

and this is her all put together. i'm real happy with how it's turning out!
the bottom panel at the front isnt fastened up, i was going to secure it with velcro strips so i can get to the PC easily.

as you can see i'm not going to have a lighted marquee.. i decided i didnt want one right at the start. they just dont appeal to me.

    so what next.
well i need to cut holes for the speakers in the underside of the top.
i need to mark up and cut out the control panel.
i need to get some card to go round the monitor.
    i need some perspex
and i need to paint it.

it is quite heavy though. i should think 2 of us could lift it but i'm thinking of taking it appart to transfer to my house. then putting it back together in my games room. it wouldnt take long and would be a lot easier than carrying it upstairs!!

    do it!
i've just dismantled my cab, and then set it up again at my house. i was going to use a spare 17"monitor i had but i've ended up putting my 21" flatscreen samsung TV in it and it's a perfect fit.
RGB scart for my XBOX and SVHS for my PC

i went to B&Q today and got some "Fablon" which is a durable sticky back plastic. they had some nice wood effect ones but at £9.50 a roll (and i'd need about 3 or 4) it was too much, so i opted for one small roll of black to cover the control panel. it has quite a nice texture to it. and i'll paint the rest.

i've marked and drilled out the control panel holes. i did a lot of measuring and took my time over these to make sure i got them right.

i then coverd them in "Fablon" and cut a small hole where each button was.

and this is the finnished result.

Glad to see you've stuck a tv in, and not a monitor!. when you're playing with jamma cabs or building your own, there's nothing like the game/s looking and playing authentic. Monitors in my opinion just don't cut it.
I had to take one of the fans off the processor, from my cab (duel fans) to replace a duffer in the wifes pc. Now my arcade cab sits dormant, until i can be bothered to replace the fan I have removed.
    Looking good..

You can get actual 'arcade monitors' which are apparently the real article and have characteristics just like the real arcade machines, well I think they're the same. Google it and there's quite a few pages about it/comparisons. Keyamon it looks superb so far, keep up the good work! Also, consider putting a coin-op module in it, they're not too expensive and they define authenticity.

thanks m8 i missed a few updates out so i'll put them all in this post.

i've now made the Bezel to go round the screen. it was coverd in the last of my roll of "Fablon" (that didnt go far) and once i get some printer ink it'll have instruction cards from old arcade cabs stuck round the edge which should look sweet.

here are the desktop skins i made from a MAME bezel i liked

    menu screen

    loading screen

and i've configured the .ini file so i just have a the emulators listed on the first page

    -----------

i gave it a coat of paint with some Quick dry satinwood and now it looks like a proper cab

i've also wired it all up, but i've not taken any pictures of that yet. i'll be removing the control panel to fix it all in properly and solder a couple of wires i had to extend. and i'll take some then. it's playable though. and it's great fun it needed a bit of configuring in the emulators but that's to be expected.

    so what's left to do:-

1 mount the two side buttons for pinball games.
2 attach the joysticks properly (the bolts in at the mo are the wrong size realy)
3 get all the artwork printed. i'll be printing the Street Fighter logo for the Marquee hopefully this week. then next payday i'm getting some large stickers for the sides. probably Ryu on one side and CAPCOM down the other. only £10 each from a local sign maker.
4wire up the XBOX power button on to the outside of the cab.

i tidied up the wires today. screwed the interface in to place and solderd some wires that i'd had to extend.
i also fastend the joysticks in properly

then tested it out to make sure it was still all working

i'm hoping to print out the Marquee tomorrow, if my parents have enough ink in their printer
