Star Wars to open TV front ... George Lucas

As Jedi fans polish their lightsabres in time for the release of Revenge of the Sith on May 19, George Lucas has announced he is preparing two Star Wars TV projects for next year.

The first is a live-action spin-off Lucas will reportedly direct himself. The story will be set in a time between the upcoming Revenge of the Sith and the original Star Wars film. The main characters will not be the same as the key heroes from the franchise.

The second project is a 3D animated TV series of 30 minute-long episodes called Clone Wars. It is about the battle led by Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi and other Jedi knights against the Army of the Republic at the end of Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Clone Wars is based on an existing animated series, made up of five-minute-long episodes, broadcast on the Cartoon Network TV channel.

Lucas made the announcement last weekend to 30,000 fans attending a Star Wars convention in Indianapolis - the largest of its kind. "When we first did Star Wars [in 1977], we made an effort to push it at science-fiction conventions and make everyone aware that we were making this space opera," Lucas told the convention, the first time he has attended a fan gathering in 18 years.

He added: "It was through that effort of appealing to fans first that allowed the film to be a huge success."

Meanwhile, tickets for a marathon screening of all six Star Wars films sold out in only five minutes in London yesterday. The event is to take place on May 16 at the Empire cinema in London's Leicester Square, ahead of the May 19 US premiere. "This is the fastest-selling screening we've ever had," said cinema spokesperson Katy Harris.

Starting at 7am, all the Star Wars films will be shown back to back and will conclude at midnight with the world premiere of Revenge of the Sith. George Lucas and Darth Vader actor Hayden Christensen will show up for the last film, no doubt surrounded by grateful but bleary-eyed fans.
