PC won't shut down! Help!

Ok. this is the 2nd time it has happened to me now and its freakin me out! :|

last night, my pc just turned on by itself. no joke! it then takes me to the login bit in xp and i select shut down.

it proceeds as normal, but just before it goes out, it just restarts again. i tried going to hibernate and it just restarts.

i have tried shutting it down from windows too, to no avail.

i ended up just pulling the power plug :annoyed:

so then, any ideas?

It may need a bios update, and also check in bios that you have disabled 'wake on LAN' if you have it in there.

I had one like that and after flashing the motherboard bios with the latest firmware it fixed it.

ok, i know nothing about flashing.

any pointers on where to start and how i actually do it.

my wake on lan has been already disabled!

Find out the make and model of your motherboard, then go the manufacturers website, and look for bios updates, also...on the site, look up any faq's and help files regarding flashing your board.

do you have power on by keyboard or mouse set ?
usually under power managment options in the bios level.
i have seen this make pc's boot back up berofe, even if keyboard or mouse has not been touched.

My computer used to do this alot when the computer was overheating

i checked the bios the other night. the CPU temp was well under the cut off temp. and wake up via mouse/keyboard was disabled too.

looks like i'll prpb need a bio update but i'm kinda scared of doing it. surely my MB and PC will be totally fooked if it goes wrong!?

it seems to be shutting down ok for now....so i might just leave it for now...
