Question Head Unit in Renault Megane

I have a 2002 Renault Megane and the stereo unit is built into the main console of the car. This is a real pain as I want to hook up my ipod and listening to music while driving. Problem is that the FM transmitter sounds poop in my car and you have to keep moving it.

Is it possible to manouvere some wires or something and hook up straight to the speakers in the car? Maybe there is a central point or something that the stereo connects to that I could use?

Any ideas? I am probably being a bit too ambitious here but it is worth a go!

I did speak to Renault who offered to install a cd changer in the boot, bit pointless with 20gb of music on my ipod!!!!

I used to have a megane when they 1st came out, and bought a kit through Halfrauds which enabled you to put a conventional ISO stereo into the fascia, and it clipped around the edge of the stereo to follow the stupid curved desigh of the original stereo. I know you may not want a new stereo, but I did it cos the original one was shite and I wanted an aux input too....
Unless there is a aux input around the back of the unit, I think the only way you can do it is with FM

I am doing searches at the moment to find out if there is before I begin dismantling the console in the car! It is just arkward as you said due to the curved design.

According to the car manual I can unclip the current unit and replace it, all I need is some small thin Alan Keys and this job can be done.

After looking into it more I can replace the head unit and the surrounding fascia. Problem is, I really don't want to. Just want access to the aux input. As I can't get a full fascia to occupy where the old unit used to be I am going to give this a miss.

You can also get the replacement facia's from Renault dealers (this allows you to fit a normal stereo), I got one from halfords for £15 and it was shite, colour didn't match and it would not fit properly so it went back.
I then contacted the dealer and got the proper one (which was actually slightly cheaper)and it matched and fitted perfectly.
I sold the car but still have the part (somewhere in my garage), it was for a Megane 1.6 cabriolet (2002) so should be the same as what you require. If you want it you can have it for a fiver including postage. Let me know if interested.

No rush fella, appreciate your help. I actually went by my local halfords this morning and the chav sales assistant said I could only buy one online. He then said why you want an ipod innit, when you can have a dvd player innit and play mp3's innit. Stupid boy. :nowords:
