    Help Overclocking

firstly i am sorry if i am not allowed to request help for this. if its banned let me know and i will edit

    Right i have the following:

Althlon Xp (Barton) 2800+ (step A)
1536mb DDR3200 Crucial Standard (3 Modules of 512 Each) Dual Channel
    DFI NF2 Ultra Infinity
    Artic Cooler (CPU)
    Tagan TG480-U22 480W ATX2.01 2Force SLi Compliant Silent PSU
    SATA Hard Drive 250Gb
    Lots Of Cooling Fans

The Thing is i have overclocked it to 185FSB * 12.5 which gives me 2.31mhz. I have heard that you can get these chips up a bit more. not too sure what to do (either lower the multiplier and higher the fsb or what???)

at 187+ fsb the pc hangs and freezes

Also i have set the vcore to 1.675v and have also tried 1.7v (not sure how high is safe)

apart from this i havnt changed any other bios settings. should i?

    thanks

You've got a fairly good hit of extra speed there as it is. If your PC is stable under stress conditions with that setup, then quit while you're ahead. Without water cooling, you're not going to get much more out of that core.

Normally I would have the FSB set at least 5 lower than the last setting which locked up the PC, but if its stable enough at 2 below, then fine.

Also, adding more fans gives you more cooling potentially, but also adds more stress to your PSU, making it run hotter, which could have a negative effect, and cuts out space for air circulation inside the box so be careful there...

My advice would be to stick with what you have. Without water cooling you shouldn't really be stable at those settings anyway :nowords:

thanks neo2810 for that info. pitty i cant get any better.

I have ran Prime95 on the 'torture test' and setting 'blend' for over 6 hours with no problems at all. so 185fsb should be stable for me

    thanks

Thats a pretty good stress test... You must have good air flow. If you want to crank the juice up a little more, you would up the multiplier (and lower the FSB slightly so as not to jump in too big increments, do the math, and up it in incriments of around 5-10MHz each time) and compensate with the VCore, but you've got stable, faster system there, so I personally would stick.

IMPORTANT: I am in no way offering you advice which is guaranteed to work, and modifying your CPU settings can result in destroying your CPU or other components of your system. Any modifications you do at your own risk!

    That said, crank away

    Hello,

I would have thought it would be better to up the FSB some more?!?

I would try and get a 200FSB with a lower multi say 11.5 x = 2.31 ghz - you may need to up the voltage some more though - 1.75 v should be fine but youll have to play around. I think your chip is rated to 1.85v but i wouldnt recommend that as temps will go up.

Your memory is rated to run at 400 mhz so the system will be much faster and have loads better throughput with a 200FSB even though the processor is running at the same speed.

Here's a great site to help answer ALL your questions

    http://www.amdboard.com/ocspecial.html

Just keep an eye on the CPU temp etc

I have my sys clocked as follows and its stable:

    AMD XP-M 2500+ (1800mhz @ 2415 mhz)
    1 x 512mb Samsung 3200mb DDR-400 Single Channel :O(
    210 FSB
    11.5 Multi
    1.7 VCore
    2.70 Volts Memory (samsung DDR-400 @ 420 mhz)
    MB: Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe

GPU = MSI Nvidia FX 5700 Ultra
GPU Core 475 running at 562 mhz
GPU Memory Bus 906 running at 1 GHZ
    AGP Bus 75 Mhz @ 1.6v

    All Air Cooled !!!

    Temps:
    Cpu Idle: 46C
    CPU Full Load: 50/51C
    System Temp: 28C/29C
    GPU Idle: 38C/39C
    GPU Load: 55C/63C

Does 1mb PI in 42 secs
Runs Prime 95 stable for over 12 hours

Have a play around and good luck!!
