Did you mean it stayed on for 20 minutes then went off or did it stay on till you powered it off. have a look at the powerline you may just have too many items on it at once. 8 gang extensions look great but its way to many sometimes if you have a load on it like Printers, Scanners and such.turn all but the pc and monitor off and try that then add things one at a time till you find out if its the extension that cant handle the loads.Ive seen this before and that was what it was, everthing came off one 13 amp socket to an extension lead.

I didnt mean to the tower i meant to the power supply. if its fine in your house then its a powerline problem at his place.

Sudden thought when you brought it to yours did you bring the monitor with you and does that work ok at your place. Could be a clue but migtht not be anything.

often a quick ping like that is a power problem, either overloading the socket as has been mentioned or a short curcuit causing the PSU to cut out with a "ping" (although said "ping" can be silent in many models)

at your house did u connect a different keyboard and stuff? try it with nothing connected atall except the power cable at your mates house and see if it powers up then. also try unplugging a fully functional thing such as a lamp that is definitly working and conected directly to the wall (no extension or adapter) and plug the pc straight into that socket since you know it works

could also be a coincidnece - maybe a loose wire inside which happened to rattle away from the edge of the case when you took it home then rattled back again when you got back to your mates
