    Default Router Problem

Just got me a US Robotics router so I can have two computers on my ADSL connection and have a small home network too. All seems fine except that i cannot get WinMX to download anything and DC++ just locks the PC up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Funny thing is, Other WinMX users download off me no bother

    Spec.

    USR 9106 Wireless gateway/ADSL Modem/ Router/ 4 port switch thingy
2 home built PCs both running XP Pro

You need to set port forwarding on your router to allow DC++ and WinMX to get through. I dont use either anymore so dont know the ports used, but DC++ has it documented in the "options" if I remember correctly. Check their websites, they will list the ports you need to forward, just set your router to forward those ports to the IP addy of the PC you use them on...

Cheers mate. Just to confirm, I forward the ports to the IP of the PC not the IP of the router or my ISP IP ?
It's just that when I boot up the router allocates me an IP, depending on wether or not the other computer is turned on, this can end in .2 or .3 the router one staying constant as .1

Yes, you would forward to the IP of the PC, not your ISP.. the router will always have the same IP, if you keep your router as the dhcp server, it may change the IP of your PC now and again, which means you will have to keep changing the IP in the routers forwarding section.. maybe best to assign a static IP to your PC and it will stay that way in the routers forwarding.

Thanks, could you please explain to me how to make my PCs IP static and not subject to change. I only have two machines on the network and it seems to assign the same two IP no's but depending on which order the PCs are started in seems to determine which IP is allocated to each

Have a look here, applies to XP, but same for 2k etc... make sure you set the default gateway to the IP of your router, and don't worry about putting anything into the DNS settings.

Tried this mate, set me up a static IP, trouble is I cannot then connect to the net? Do I need to set something in the router config. to say thatIi want to use a static IP? I had to set it back to obtain DNS automatically to be able to access the net again
OMG I am gettting real confused here

I presume you discovered that you have to put the default gateway IP into DNS as well for each PC? Also, you need to change your router settings from DHCP distribution to Static...

Since you've sorted it, you'll have found this all out anyway, wasting pixels, must stop... :|

Correct on the first one but I left the DHCP server enabled, would there be any gain in disabling it? Everything seems to be working OK and getting reasonable speeds in DC++ ??

It probably wont matter, as your PC's are set as static and will just ignore DHCP traffic, but it means you have extra traffic on your network which is unnecessary. It's up to you, if you're happy with the speeds and have no issues, feel free to leave it, but I would change it. If you get problems after that, change it back...

i changed it, doesn't seem to have made a diff, but I will leave it anyway.
next question is.. how can I disconnect my cheeky eldest daughters internet connection short of what I am doing now, pulling the patch lead every time she pisses me off... There must be a more subtle way using the router settings?
