I'm comletely clueless...

...But I'm ok with the fact, so laugh if you want, but there's no need to point it out. Right.

I've just been given a decent PC by my uncle who builds/fixes them and has done for years, I'm really chuffed with it, but have been hounding him day and night with questions ever since I got it. I think he desearves a break, so now I'm going to hound you lot!

When I got the PC, he said that the only problem with it was that very occasionally, it overheats, causing it to crash/freeze up, well it hadn't happened untill 2 or 4 days ago when this heat wave started, and then it was every half hour sometimes! (Completely frozen,- no mouse, no ctrl-alt-del... Nada.)
When he gave me the machine, he said, "sorry about the fan, it was the only one I had when I was putting this together," It's got multi-coloured led's that shine through the top of the case, which I dont mind, but what I DO mind is that it is the loudest thing I have EVER heard!!!
I have now taken a side panel off the case and am blowing a little fan heater that's set to cold, inside,(you can't even hear it over the noise of the PC!) which is working ok, but I don't want it like that for ever.

What do you think I shoultd try.

I run all my pc's with the sides off, im sure that helps a bit on temp levels

Try getting some Vantec fans. They do some nice quiet ones.

Very quiet. I used to use Papst fans as well and they were mega quiet but ran slower, hence not being quite as effective. Worth looking at using larger fans as these can shift a greater volume of air while requiring less revs per minute.

Cheers, I've had the side off for a couple of days now with a big fan blowing straight into it, but it has still crashed a couple of times, so I'm now wondering if it is overheating, or if it could be something else? (The room is mega hot at the mo.)

I would have thought that becsue the sides were off it would possibly overheat quicker? I thought cases were designed to circulate the air more around the case?

In the past i've just added more case fans, fantastic in the winter as it saves turning the central heating on in the room!

normally cooler with sides off

would suggest you replace your CPU fan with the largest that will fit your mobo ASAP as the PC is shutting down to stop you cooking your cpu/mobo etc

would suggest another site for reveiws on sound noise and reports etc
