A father-of-three was beaten to death after apparently refusing to give a group of youths a light for a cigarette.
Mugilan Sutherman, 43, of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, died in hospital after he was attacked as he stood near a pub in Failsworth, south of Oldham.
Greater Manchester Police detectives investigating his death arrested four teenagers on suspicion of murder.
The two boys, aged 18 and 15, and two girls, aged 15 and 14, were being questioned by murder squad detectives.
Chief Superintendent Keith Bentley said: "The victim, a father of three, came into confrontation with a group of people on Canal Bridge.
Following the confrontation, he collapsed into the highway, where police found him minutes later in a poorly condition."
He said the underwater search unit was looking in the nearby canal to see if "anything has been disposed of".
A post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death was due to have been carried out, but the results were not yet being released.
Mr Sutherman had been standing on the street close to the Bridge Pub shortly after midnight when he was approached by the gang.
Witnesses claim one of the youths demanded a light for a cigarette, and when Mr Sutherman refused, he was attacked.
The victim was taken to hospital but despite the efforts of doctors he later died.
