    Default Tivo Probs... Modem fried?

    any ideas ppl?

Tivo will not connect to do daily updates or test calls, just get "Failed, No Dial Tone." The phone line is working fine and the cable seems fine. Just wondered if there were any tests or anything that I don't know about or if anyone has experienced the same.

Seems a bit of a coincidence that I noticed it since we had a few storms?

    Cheers in advance

The only test I can think of to confirm the phone line is OK upto the Tivo is to remove the phone cord from the socket on the back of the Tivo and plug a phone, minus cord, onto the end of it. If you get dialtone, then it would appear to be the modem fried. A possible cheap repair alternative would be to use a Turbonet or, cheaper, a Terbonet card, both available on Ebay, and probably elsewhere too. The Tivo will connect to your PC over a network and use your broadband to get the programme info then. And you get a lot more options too, like copying recordings onto your PC, to burn to DVD if you want.

I have had the same problem in the past. Try a different cable! I found that my laptop's modem cable would NOT work for some reason.

I dug around and found an old phone and used that cable and it worked.

Not an issue for me since I fitted my Turbonet card ;-)

Tried numurous cables, starting to think its fried.
Can get a dial tone fine, its just seems the tivo thinks it can't.

With the turbonet card do you connect to the tivo service itself via the web or is it a method of the scam that I heard of?

Got a lifetime subscription thats all.

Yes, the updates come from the tivo servers.

Saves them a few bob in phone bills as well when you update over the net

Both of my tivos use internet updates and I've had no problems.
