    What bits have you muted?

I still hear sound if I don't have both "Volume Control" and "Wave" set to muted in the sound control panel.

Try seeing if the control panel mutes the sound. If it also doesn't mute then it's an XP issue. If it does mute then we'll have to think some more about it.

careful your not using on board sound if you have a seperate card... dunno why that would affect volume though, unless your mediaplayer uses the standalone card, but windows is controlling on board or sommat.. dunno..not even sure if thats possible. check which sound devices yer using..

.. but ive never heard of this problem before.. clutching at straws..

Using my standalone card, my mobo does have onboard sound, but thats disabled in the bios so doesnt even come up on my hardware list.

I dunno what it could be

It'll mute the sound, but after skipping to a point in a movie/song (search/fast forward) the sound returns, despite the player being on mute.

If i mute all, i.e. control panel > mute, then nothing is heard.

Im on about an issue with my media player/winamp/application to play sound/video...

    weird problem tbh
