Microsoft is no longer providing updates to non-genuine versions of its Windows XP operating system. From today, the company has switched over to a full launch of its Windows Genuine Advantage Programme as part of its ongoing anti-piracy campaign.

Users will now have to join the WGA authentication program if they want to receive software updates from the Microsoft Download Centre or from Windows Update. However, MS says it will still provide security patches for pirated systems, which will be available via Automatic Updates in Windows.

To register for the WGA, users just need to visit the Microsoft Download Centre, Windows Update or Microsoft Update. There they will be prompted to download an ActiveX control that checks the authenticity of their Windows software and, if Windows is validated, stores a download key on the PC for future verification.

Microsoft stresses that this process "does not collect any information that can be used by Microsoft to identify or contact the user".

Back in January 2005, Microsoft extended the pilot scheme - which had been running in English since September 2004 - to include 20 different languages. It also broadened the kind of content available to participants. Microsoft says many of the 40 million people who signed up for the pilot did so because they wanted a way to check that their own copy of XP was genuine.

The company also says it will replace pirated software with genuine versions - free of charge to customers who submit piracy reports and proof of purchase, and for £61 or £92 for XP Home or Professional editions respectively for customers who submit piracy reports but don't have proofs of purchase.

sounds bit like scare mongering to me. software updates like what? service packs or something?

all most people download (from microsoft anyway) at the moment is security updates... which isnt going to stop it seems.

Windows Update is merely going to be checking your PID against a known list of pirated keys in use.

If your PID isn't on the list, then you will continue to get updates.

No, only the Service pack installer would check your PID.

Now you won't be getting anything (other than basic security patches) if you don't have a valid PID.

i doesnt look to be working i just used windows update and ive got a dodgy serial, although im about to change it now ive generated a new one after some reinstalling of xp

Nothing that can't be cirmcumvented no doubt. If you have (and know you have) a dodgy copy, then you're bound to be aware of places to look to get round this. If it's even that necessary.

Noticed something tonight, so I thought I'd cross post it:

I've noticed something tonight. I ran belarc advisor which tells you about your system including your serials. My xp pro serial is the xxxxx-640-xxxxxxx-xxxxx type (ok) for the keychange I made. The thing that surprised me was that internet explorer came back with a serial like that above (640) but the key is the devils own key (FCKGW-etc). I had a microsoft authenticity check the night before this thread started (I had a codec issue & found myself there) but I use firefox. Might it be the case that it's those of you using IE that are failing the authenticity check?

My serial has the 640 in it as well, and it is a legit copy so the "640" rumour doesn't count for anything.

640 merely denotes you have a corporate license.

AV sez, "This week, Microsoft started requiring users to verifiy their serial number before using Windows Update. This effort to force users to either buy XP or tell them where you got the illegal copy is called 'Genuine Advantage.' It was cracked within 24 hours."
Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter:

How to sort the problem

Open Internet Explorer

1. Go to Tools, Manage Add-Ons
2. There's a drop down bar which allows you to view the add-ons
currently being used by IE.
3. Disable the Windows Genuine Advantage
4. Restart Explorer and go to Windows Update

You may get a pop up saying it's disabled but it fades after a second or
so. Updates then commence. :thumbs

My xp corp failed the check, but i install a patch called twk-update patch. This patches the legitcheckcontrol.dll file in c:windows/system32. Afterwards you can update as normal.

Can i attach this file? If so let me know i will will add it.

Does sonyboy's method still work? I'm currently using linux at the minute so can't test it, but it looks incredibly simple compared to this method :cartman
