In theory, you can use a seperate modem without any problem at all.

In practice, it will never work as the MAC address of your new modem would have to be authorised on the NTL network.

Phone the bastards up and tell them you are giving serious consideration to leaving them for BT.....before you know it, you will have an official modem and 3 months broadband at half price for your trouble.

    Pegs is right.

Don't let them charge you for a service everyone else is getting for free or included in their monthly rental.

Ive just been told by my m8 that users who are going for the 10mb upgrade will have to have a new modem, the old motorola cream modems will not be compatible with 10mb connection.so you must have a new little black motorola modem or you wont get the full 10mb speed.Anyone know if this is the case, and how much do we have to pay for the new modem if anything at all.

I'm pretty sure it was only the SB3100 that needed replacing, but it may be the 4100 too. I had mine changed months ago, took them about a month to come out and do it. They also changed something in the box on the wall.

Leave a message on the blueyonder newsgroups, thats how I got in touch with them to get mine changed.

    What's Analog x & how does that prove you're getting 1.2 MBs.
I was upgraded about 3 weeks ago & even from blueyonders own news server I only get between 600 - 800 Kbs. Most of the speed test sites I try report at best 5 Mb/s which is only half what I would expect.

TBH I was thinking about down grading to the 4 Meg service cos I'm just not getting the advertised speeds.

Is there any way I can properly test my connection speed & throughput ?

    Thanks.

AnalogX Netstat Live is just a small program that monitors your bandwidth, you can get it from here: http://www.analogx.com/contents/down...etwork/nsl.htm

I was getting those kind of speeds late last night, i'm not getting around 900kb/s - 1mb/s using newshosting.

You don't have one of the older modems do you? I know the cream coloured SB3100 won't allow 10mb/s. I needed BY to come out and swap mine.

It's worth posting on the blueyonder newsserver support groups if your getting shitty speeds, they'll pretty helpful from what i've seen.

I have an SB4100 modem which I'm told by TW is up to the job.
Best speeds I have ever got from Newshosting since upgrade is 600 K typically though it's around 400 K.

I'll check out the support groups but if I can't sort it & BY won't help then it's back to 4Meg for me.
