</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- E IIMA --><!-- S SF -->A murder hunt has been launched into the death of 11-year-old Rory Blackhall, whose body was found in woods in West Lothian.

Rory, of Adambrae, Livingston, went missing after being dropped off for school on Thursday. A post-mortem established that he had been murdered.

His body was found on Sunday half a mile from the school but details of how he died have not yet been released.

An incident room has been set up at Livingston police station. <!-- E SF -->

The post-mortem examination was held on Monday night after police had confirmed the body was that of Rory.

Senior police officers will hold a news conference at about 1130 BST on Tuesday.

In a brief statement issued at 0205 BST on Tuesday, Lothian and Borders Police confirmed that they had launched a murder inquiry.

    </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- E IBOX -->

Rory had not been seen since his mother Michelle dropped him off near Meldrum Primary, in the Deans area of Livingston, at about 0830 BST last Thursday.

The alarm was raised some seven hours later when his grandfather went to collect him and it was found he had not been in classes all day.

A search was launched and escalated over the weekend as fears for his safety grew.

However, his body was discovered just before 1300 BST on Sunday in woods at the western end of Dechmont Law, between the M8 and Meldrum Primary.

    Police at schools

His death raised concerns among parents of children attending schools in the area.

The community officer for Meldrum Primary School has cancelled his annual leave and will be spending this week with staff and pupils.

Officers have also been stationed at all the other primary schools across the town for public reassurance.

Chief Inspector Jim Thomson, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "We had a fantastic response from the public who wanted to help search for Rory.

"Over the weekend we had nearly 300 members of the public helping us with the search in addition to the 70 trained mountain search and rescue teams and specialist police officers.

"This shows the strength of community spirit in the area and how much everyone has been affected by recent events.

"We have placed officers at primary schools across the town recognising people would be concerned and the feedback we have had from parents has been very supportive."

    Orange roses

At a media conference on Friday, Rory's mother Michelle Blackhall, 41, said there were problems at home because of the break-up of his parents' marriage and he was also unhappy about returning to school. There are reports that he was being bullied.

Shocked residents have laid flowers in tribute to Rory, who was described as a "fantastic" son by his mother.

Dozens of bouquets have been laid near the spot where his body was found, many with messages for Rory and his family.

Among them were some orange roses with a card attached bearing the single word "Why?".

One said Rory's smile had "touched the hearts of those of us who don't know you". Anyone with any information should contact police on 01506 445650<!-- E BO -->

Update Breaking news from sky news:- http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0...193073,00.html

    MURDERED BOY ASPHYXIATED

Police investigating the murder of schoolboy Rory Blackhall have revealed he was asphyxiated.

They have also said the 11-year-old's body was found fully clothed and was covered by a green tent.

The discovery was made in woodland in the Livingston area of West Lothian on Sunday, four days after he went missing.

His mother, Michelle Blackhall, said he had been upset after a traumatic year which included his parents splitting up.

She took Rory to school on Thursday morning, dropping him off as usual at a lay-by 300 yards away.

When his grandfather arrived later at Meldrum Primary to collect him he was told he had not been to lessons.

He immediately raised the alarm and hundreds of police, local volunteers and mountain rescue teams scoured the area.

Rory's body was eventually found at the western end of Dechmont Law, between the M8 motorway and the school, just before 1pm on Sunday.

Forensic specialists and sniffer dog teams had been carrying out detailed investigations of the wooded area.

The body lay at the scene for around 30 hours before it was taken away to a mortuary for formal identification by a family member.

Lothian and Borders Police thanked everyone who joined the search, saying their efforts were "fantastic".

Chief Insp Jim Thomson, who had been leading the hunt, said: "It shows the strength of community spirit in the area and how much everyone has been affected by recent events."

Uniformed officers were stationed at Meldrum Primary School yesterday and a community officer will be spending this week with staff and pupils.

Detectives have set up an incident room at Livingston police station. The number to call is 01506 445650.

something suggests that he was being bullied or threatened at school, sounds like he did a bunk.

i'm glad he was found fully clothed as that would suggest that at least he wasnt raped by some pervert before being killed, of course like everyone else i'm saddened that someone has killed this child and i hope they get the bastard / bastards that did it.

is it possible that it could have been other (older) children who did it rather than an adult as was the case near me not long ago when a 12 year old girl was charged with attempted murder of a 5 year old boy.

Yea I remember hearing on the news last night that his mother said that Rory
was scared of going back to school so it must be bullying but unfortunatey a strange suicide could also be an option I guess. The pressure kids are under nowerdays in school is phenominal.
But we'll have to wait and find out.

suicide isnt likely as he was asphyxiated and i would assume the tent was placed over his body after his death

its a tragedy that young people have to die before they experience life fully.

something makes me think this case will be solved fairly quickly. I hope thats the case anyway.

Body found in Rory murder probe

    Source BBC News URL:- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4193262.stm

The body was found after police officers broke into the house
Police hunting the killer of schoolboy Rory Blackhall have found a body following the search of a house.
The adult corpse was discovered in a house in the Camps Rigg area of Livingston, the 11-year-old's home town, after police broke in.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Police confirmed that a body was recovered from the house.

Forensic officers carried out the search on Sunday, a week after Rory's body was discovered in woodland.

The police spokeswoman added that a post-mortem examination and formal identification were expected to take place on Monday.

Rory's body was discovered three days after he failed to turn up at school.

    Forensic team

The investigation into Rory's murder was launched a week ago

A post mortem examination revealed that he had been asphyxiated.

The forensic team began their inquiries at about 1200 BST on Sunday. An area near the house was cordoned off.

Detectives earlier launched a text messaging service to encourage people to come forward with information. The number, 07717 997 885, allows the public to send in texts as well as pictures and video clips.

On Saturday, police revealed that they urgently wanted to speak to a man who was spotted in the area of Livingston where the 11-year-old was last seen.

The man was wearing a deerstalker-style nylon hat and a black bomber jacket.

Detectives have taken almost 300 calls since making the appeal and since launching the murder investigation, have received over 1,000 calls and more than 60 emails.

    FILM LINKED TO RORY DEATH
    LINK :- http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0...427134,00.html
A macabre link has emerged between the death of schoolboy Rory Blackhall and a film made by a former pupil at his school.

Dead Man Falls shows a young boy 'lying dead' in woodland near Meldrum Primary School in Livingston where the 11-year-old's body was found two weeks ago.

Some of Rory's classmates appeared in the 13-minute film, shot by former pupil Simon Miller, which had its first public viewing at the town's Dens Community High School last year.

The Scottish Daily Mail reported that Rory murder suspect Simon Harris was at the public viewing.

The film was made in August 2003 and was also shown at the Edinburgh Film Festival.

Film co-producer Liz Smith told the Daily Mail: "We are aware the police are interested in this film and have passed on the details of everyone who starred in it.

"Rory was not in the movie or even auditioned for it, but I was quite disturbed when I found out Rory had died in the woods where we filmed.

"Its very disturbing, particularly since we used children from the school. Looking back, it is terribly chilling."

Dead Man Falls centres around English schoolboy Nicholas who struggles to fit in when he moves to Livingston during the Falklands conflict in the 1980s.

The boy manages to make new friends by introducing them to the macabre game Dead Man Falls where participants compete to fake dramatic deaths in nearby woods.

Rory vanished after being dropped off near his school by his mother on the morning of August 18.

His body was found in woodland three days later covered in a tattered tent. A post-mortem examination found he had been asphyxiated.

It has since emerged that murder suspect Harris, 37, whose body was found at his home in Livingston on Sunday, was awaiting trial on sex abuse charges.
