I work as a site manager for a big building company and it is no surprise that the big earners seem to be the self employed building tradesmen or self employed IT people.
For those young persons out there...
In the IT department to become self employed you have to be really good at the job, pretty clever, and focussed on making yourself be indispensable to your contractors.
In the building industry you have to work alongside some pretty awful people for a few years, then the benefits come. The work can be hard at times but if you are prepared to graft then the rewards come, eventually you don't have to graft - you become a sub-contractor. Bricklayers, Plasterers, and Joiners tend to earn the most. Between 100 and 175 pounds per day is the norm.
As a site manager this year I earned about 30K plus decent car and including petrol (before tax - and the taxman really stings you for the car and fuel). Which is OK, this year was a good year. My site labourer probably earns about the same if he does an occasional Saturday or Sunday.
Comments welcome.
