    Default little project

    http://www.marcode.net/dev/

been doing some basic javascript/xhtml/css for a module at uni and decided to update my own site in the mean time..

it validates fine and works great in opera/ff/anything thats not ie. im not really bothered, its basically just a personal portal where i put bookmarks (still to add those to new design) and an irc client and any games (theres only blackjack atm) or pics or anything i want to use at uni or feel like hosting. but i dont use ie so its not a concern.

if theres a quick easy way to stop the layout being mangled by ie lemme know.

its not got much to it yet, its taken me about 7 or 8 hours playing about to get it to where it is. using basic php for includes and pure xhtml 1.1/css for the rest, first time ive tried using xhtml and css from scratch and i think its turned out nicely. nice and clean and functional which is the most important part for me.

i am just using absolute sizing ect purely because i think it looks nicer and i dont use any pcs that have a res lower than 1024x768.

    be gentle..

Looks great, I'm not going to do anything about my layers either until explorer 7 comes out, It's that or go back to tables. They're also implementing full 8bit transparency on png's as well at last, only 2 years after firefox

I think there's nothing wrong with absolute sizing. You probably wouldn't use it for an information site like wikipedia, but on image conscious sites it far more important...

The site looks good mate. It's got a good layout etc, I would prefer it more fuller if you know what I mean.

It's got some good charetaristics about it, but I reckon the color should be a bit lighter. (my opinion).

But I can't say too much on the IE front as I dont use it very often.

Keep up the hard work buddy

    hey mate - looking good

to get it to align properly in ie, you need to do the following:

create a new class in your css file

    .left{ float:left;}

then you need to enclose sections in your html in new div's. create one that holds everything within the body section, and give it a class of left

then create another new div that encloses the ul and the buttons section, and give it a class of left again

then create one last div that encloses the content section and also give that a class of left

it's just a quick workaround, and doesn't display exactly as firefox does (didn't check opera, but it shouldn't affect it) but it does align everything to the left of the page much better

for future reference, i design my sites for IE first and foremost, then add the tweaks to get it looking right inthe other browsers. if it works in ie, then it's nearly there in firefox and opera, do it the other way round and it get's messy, especially when you start working with more complex layouts

    hope that helps mate

    bump...

ok, this is pissing me off now... can anyone tell me why the main content box is still off to the right a bit? and also why the corners of the header image i made dont seem to appear as the same colour as the background, even when it looks perfect in opera/ff?
