Default Is this true about ADSL2?

I upgraded my broadband with UK online from 8MB-22MB
Before i was getting between 4 and 5mb a sec due to me being 3k from my exchange.
I went on the UKonline website and did an upgrade checker and it said i would get a minimum of 8mb, happy days i thought.
Got my router which i had to pay another £80 for,, and had problems getting it connected in the end i had to upgrade the firmware, but i`m now getting a slightly slower speed of just over 4meg.
Ukonline have just called me to see if got the connection problems sorted and i said i did but iv`e now still only got a 4 meg connection speed.
The guy went away and came back and said that i`m actually getting the correct speed for an ADSL2 connection as i`m 3km form the exchange, i said are you sure as i was getting a faster connection before, he assured me that he was corerect.
Surely i would expect a faster connection speed than 4mb?
    Is he correct?
    Cheers. :|

8Mbit is the absolute maximum you will ever get from ADSL2 at 3KM assuming you have a good line.

Any sort of anomolies on the line, and that 8Mbit will drop rapidly.

    Thanks for the info m8.
The Ukonline website totaly misinformed me, it said i would get the mimimum of 8mb.
I got a faster connection before i upgraded, www.samknows.com says i`m only 2km from my exchange in a straight line anyway.
Got the hassle now of trying to get my router sent back and to get a refund for it.
Any1 else upgraded and got a faster connection?

Had problems with the netgear router again, actiontec now plugged back in and UKonline can have the netgear back and refund my money or they can suck eggs.
    Well browned off.

Dirtyrider how did you get them to agree to the refund? I am having loads of problems with the crappy netgear router and speeds below my previous 8mb connection. Its just not worth it. Advise people to steer clear of adsl2 for the time being.

Also how come you plugged the actiontec back in on 22mb connection as mine wont connect at all?

    Thanx

Just threatend them that i would leave(due to them giving me false info) or taking them to court(which is really easy using moneyclaim online) didn`t get too much hassle off them.
The actiontec just connected back up no problem.
For some reason the speed jumped up to 7mb for an hour today, its gone back down to 4 now though.

2km in a straight line means nowt (I expect you realise this) our telephone system is ancient compared with the likes of Hong Kong where they've had superfast ADSL for years. Your 2km straight could be 3-4km in reality, if you have some crappy old aluminium jointing somewhere along the line and (lets face it there will be repairs on just about every line in this Country!) the line quality will be heavily degraded also. I'm sticking with cable, mostly fibre optic and MUCH newer! I've been 10meg for ages now and the speed increases just keep on coming!!

i'm tempted to move from Plusnet 2mb to UKOnline (up to 22mb) at the moment. I'm about 1.8km in a straight line from exchange.

Would u reccommend it dirtyrider?, I heard it was impossible to get in touch with support, tho you seem to have managed it?

I would recconmend them if only because of it`s uncapped service.
In fairness when iv`e been connected i havn`t got any down time And 4 meg does what i want anyway(dled 120 gig last month).
Customer suport is a pain in the arse! :grr: I found that you can get through initaly to some1 but they can`t or don`t know what to do, then they just pass you on to some1 else who doesn`t have a clue either. :|
Best time to speak to them is about 3am. :coffee:
Didn`t like it how they told me i could have something that i couldn`t(22meg)
    Can`t get *** where i am.
    Regards
    Dirty.

1st look to the left of the screen and click on availabilty checker.
2nd enter your phone number and postcode
    3rd click check
And finaly click on locality, there should be a box with your straight line distance at the bottom.

Depends on what ISP you want to go with.
But would of thought you would get a lot faster than that< 3-4 meg maybe?
