Help Problem With Insurance Company And Garages

I guyz got a problem would value some input

I hate Direct Line ! i had a bump in my car on Wednesday, i made a claim through the insurance, i took it into a repritable Garage and they said because where the dent is on my car they need to replace the side panel and the car needs to be off the road for 3 WEEKS ! 3 WEEKS ! I use my car everyday to get to work as i live in the sticks and i am stuffed without it anyway so the garage said we dont offer you a courtsey car speak to the insurance. So i ring up the insurance company DIRECT "SCREW YOU OVER" LINE and was told even though i have fully comprehensive insurance plus i paid £500 for my premium last year i was not entitled to a curtosey car as the option has just been added to the cover this year for £15 ! well the option wasnt offered when i renewed my cover last November, so anyway i said to the guy i renew my cover end of November so cant i have a curtosey car if i pay the extra £15 ! he said no ! C**T.

So now i will have no car for 3 weeks ! no transport to get to work ! and i have to pay £400 FCKING EXCESS cos they added in the small print young persons excess is £250 on top of my £150 voulantary !

The damage to the car isnt even that bad i felt like saying FCK THE LOT OF YOU ! THEIVING BSTDS ! the Garage are obviousley milking it and the insurance company are being as unhelpfull as they can.

Has anyone got any ideas what i can do, i live in the sticks so cant get the bus as one comes every week ! and cant afford to rent a car - is it worth me challenging Direct Line on this or even making a complaint ? ? ?

    Help would be appreciated?

When I renewed my inurance with them in 2004 the option to buy cover for a courtesy car was already there, so it has been on their site for at least 15 months.

They will say that it is up to you to check what you need (even though it goes against all the rules of selling), the same with the excesses.

Ultimately it is up to you to check the details before you sign, they always send you copies of the agreements. Just because you didn't see the compulsory excesses probably won't wash with them.
It stinks but they're not here to make you happy, they're here to make money.

Speak with the garage and see if they would do it cheaper as a non-insurance claim, also it doesn't take 3 weeks to replace the panel, it should take a couple of days at most, so tell them you will bring the car in when they have the part (unless the car is dangerous to drive, of course)
Me and my fella spit our dummies out so we won't be coming back. ever. boo hoo.

This is a techy / hackers forum not a fu**ing mothers meeting so - peace out.

    Was the accident your fault?

It not if you have LEGAL EXPENSIS on your policy, you can take out a hire car and claim the cost back through your legal expensis.

Fully comp does not always offer a Replacement car, as is classed as a BENEFIT, which you pay extra on, Like Protected NCB, Legal Cover, European Cover, Coutsy car.

If the accident was a fault accident and your claiming off your own insurance, and you have no C/C cover. Your stuck i'm afraid.

Even if you took it out 2 weeks before you put in a claim, it wouldn't be valid either till the next renewal or 1 month after putting it on, to help prevent fraudulant claims.

You woulnd't belive the amount of people call me after 2 days off adding a C/C or Protected No Claims, to put a claim through they have been hit by an unknown car in a car park. FRAUD writeen all over it.

So sorry back on topic, you are stuck on this one I am afraid, Was it a Approved Repairer of ours, or one of your own repairers, You can request to take it to your garage, take it to a shit hot expensive one, where they do offer a C/C as standard, I.E Bmw/ Priory Fiat/ Ford/ Nissan.

With regards to what Lin said, depends on cost of repairs again EXCESS amount and Loss of NCB which will mean a rise in your renewal due to loosing 2 years NCB, you can see if you can settle privatly with the garage, Altho doing it that way means you dont get a priority booking in date, which will may mean you end up waiting weeks, as they prefer to do Insurance work first, as they can charge that big extra.

All have general repair body shops, so your car doesn't need to be in one of those garage if its not a ford in a ford garage.

    Hope this helps!

Also just to add, Putting in a complaint will be no use, as all they say is printed in your documents that you "read" and signed and returnd. So putting in a claim, wont leave you with a leg to stand on.

Same as the Young Driver XS is all in the documents as well.

Also how long do you get before you have to book it in, i mean if possible i would prefer to leave it untill after xmas as it gives me more time to sort something out and save up some money as i am well skint ! any ideas if there is a time limit when the repairs must be carried out.

The knock was mostly my fault (well thats how it would look if it went to court) but the old biddy in the other car was well in the centre of the road.

At least i have learnt some valuable lessons, never trust anyone, always read the fine print and never trust anyone - oh i put that already.

Cheers guys for your help it is much appreciated Karma will be given.

If they havnt done nout on the car i see no reason why you cant take it to another garage, as for time limit i suggest you give them a call, you might consider asking the new garage if there be willing to pick it up for you see as though your giving them custom, where abouts you based m8?

I completely agree, if nothing has been done to the vehicle as yet take it back and take it to either another one of their approved bodyshops or an independant one, which then you need to get a quote then submit it to your insurance company who will then give the go ahead to have it repaired (or not)

3 Weeks sounds more like "we will fit it in around other jobs"

As said above you can cancel at any time, If work has not already been started.

Best phone another garage who provide C/C for you and ask them how much for a new wing fitting and spraying + vat, once you have a figure, Is it under your XS? Will the provide a car?

When you phon up, they will probably give you another number for a "regional office" who are dealing with it. As the dept you called only deal with new claims and pass it on to another office after 24/48 hours.

Worth a try mate, as it stand your being taken for a ride, and you have no leg to stand on. Unless you want to cancel and settle it privatly or move to a garage that can give you a C/C

But bare in mind as you have no cover on your policy they may require you to add it on to your policy for the repair duration, which as being a young driver it will cost you extra as well, thats somthing to check with customer services.

Step1. Call the garage to see if they have started work on it yet.

    If Yes Your fucked

    If No

Step 2, Find a garage that may offer you a c/c. and get details of C/C to add to your insurance

Step 3 Call D/L back up and say you want to change the garage and give them address of new garage, and get them to cover the C/C for X amount of time the garage specify.

Step3 You'll need to recover the vehicle to the garage you chosen, GO get your car and drive it to your garage and drive back in the C/C

As there is no obligation to use an "approved repairer". As far as you are concernd you need a C/C and thats about it.

Dont forget to add the costs up though.

    For example

You have a £400 XS, Are you loosing any NCB for making the claim ? If so you insurance is likley to rise around 20%. Add that rise to your XS and you have a total figure of X amount, If X is more that the cost of repairs anyway, Cancel the claim.

As you'd be better settleing it privatly and paying the cost of repairs and getting a C/C. But bare in mind if you do this you will still have to add X amount on for the cover of the C/C. Add that X cover for C/C to the cost of repairs, and does this exceed your orignal amount of Loss of NCB and XS?

Lot to take in, Sorry if I explained a bit fucked up.

    Insurance is fucked up.

    1. If your under 25
    2. only a small accident.

PM me if you need any more help.

    Cheers Ghetto Moose

Some great advice, yes it is very confusing, i havent taken the car into the garage as i said i needed to think about it before i booked it in as 3 weeks is a long time, i may give renault a call and see if they can reccomend a garage that will other me a courtsey car as my car is a Clio.

I really need to sit down and work things out, bit too much to take in on a friday afternoon so will sit down 2mrr and start ringing around companies and see what i can get.

Can you cancel a claim once it has started going through the process? ? ?

Cheers for all your help this is the first time i have ever had to make a claim and i hope its the last !

    No problem mate.

Providing the car is NOT at the garage, you can cancel the claim, phone Direct Line and tell them you wanna cancel it.

Easy as that, You WONT get charged for it

If you cancel then the garage may charge you storage charges, roughly about £15 a day+vat.

To fit a quarter panel you get around 28 hours labour time, the 'working day' is 4 hours a day so 28/4=7. Seven days from the parts arriving.
It's a minimum of £700 for a quarter panel fitting, plus extras as required.
They must be very busy m8 leaving a car two weeks before they can start it, hence they haven't any courtesy cars as their stacked out.

A good reputable place will give you a courtesy car, your insurance company will ask for an estimate from your chosen repairers and authorise it pretty quickly.

Phone the holding garage to see if works started of the've got the parts in etc, if not get someone else to repair it and provide a cc.

It's busy period in the accident game atm, most decent places should be busy tbh, make sure you ask the earliest availabe date when you ring round, and how long the car will be off the road.
Drugs are only a problem to people who can't afford them.
