bigger if you can afford it. Compare brightness (measured in cd/m2 - candelas per square metre)(higher the better) - along with the contrast ratio (higher number the better), and the amount and quality of the inputs. You would like to see a combination of the following. RGB, composite, Svideo, Component, DVI, decent audio inputs and outputs to feed onto a home cinema system.

Most LCD TV screens have a native res which is called W-XGA or Wide XGA, 1366 x 768 (standard XGA is 1024 x 768)

After that its down to personal preference.

also note that very few sets actually support 1080i. If you are happy with 720p then fine, if not wait until next year.

yea sorry forgot to mention that, 1080i is a res of 1920x1080 Some sets have the ability to interpolate this down to fit on their screen and do it really well.

My projector is XGA (1024 x 768) resolution but displays 720p and 1080i beautifully (ATV vs MX unleashed at 1080i is just stunning!)

What about if you went for something like this:

    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/pr...hs1&l=en&s=dhs

supports 480i,480p,576i,576p,720p,1080i as it works as a monitor, has all the connections you'll ever need ect

or is there something horribly wrong i'm missing in there

yep that'll do the job no problem and its a good example of a set thats wxga resolution and will display the bigger 1080i resolution fine.

In August I got a JVC LT32DS6, I love it. Cost me £1400.00, no doubt they are cheaper now.

I've got a Sony 32" Windescreen CRT atm, but have been thinking of switching to LCD for ages. The 26" ones are in my price range, but just not sure if they are big enough to replace the 32".

Is it like on PC monitors, that a 17" TFT looks the same size as a 19" CRT?

After the new year, Im gonna buy a Samsung LE26R41BD. You can get one for roughly £650 online.

From what Ive read its fantastic for gaming, support 720p, 1080i. At 1st there were problems with ghosting and image tearing, but this was resolved by a firmware update. Samsung used to make these with a 12ms response time, but now they are made with 8ms, which is excellent for gaming.

Avoid, it has 25ms response time which is crap for gaming., you would get ghosting whilst playing games and watching fast moving pictures etc.

I'm using a 25ms TFT panel right now and it's fine for gaming, if there's any ghosting I can't see it.

Hmm, 25ms is a bit slow, but would that really cause ghosting? Never had anything abouve 12 in any of my lcd screens.

So what else is there in the 26" line that supports 1080i, and would work as a monitor at the same time, at a reasonable price of around £500.

your eyes / brain are probably just used to it. I used to hate the 'blur' from lcd panels but its worth the sacrifice for vibrant colours right to the edge of the screen.

yes it may SUPPORT 1080i but thats because the TV is scaling the 1080i signal back down to its native resolution of 1280 x 768. As malty says, for proper 1080i it needs to have a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Like i said above, there are few sets that do that now, wait until next march/april when the later gen sets come in with the True HD mark (as opposed to HD Ready)

Note thats the same for the Samsung above.

Whats wrong with scaling down to its native resolution, shouldn't that still do a decent job and display better quality than 720p? I know it wouldn't be as good as a True HD tv.

I was thinking about getting that dell one, but because of its response time i'm going to look for something else with a vga input and supporting 1080i, and within my price range, limited

theres nothing wrong with it at all, the scaled down images tend to look ultra sharp (well they do on my projector and my friends lcd) as long as the front end processor in the TV is up to the job. I bet at 26 - 32" theres very little noticeable difference between a scaled 1080i and a native 1080i

Personally right at this present time its better so spend £600 on something with WXGA resolution than £1000-1200 on something that can properly handle 1080i

I suspect the majority of 360 games, at least in the early days will be maximum 720p anyway just as the vast majority of xbox games are 480p at the moment.
