The head teacher of a mainly Muslim school has apologised after pizza containing ham was served to pupils. Children at St James' Primary School, in Blackburn, Lancashire, were given the food on Thursday.
Muslims, who make up 99.5% of the 381 pupils at the school, are prohibited by the Koran from eating pork.
Marjory Owen, head teacher, said staff at the school were stringent in checking food but on this occasion, ham slipped through the net. <!-- E SF -->
The school said 76 portions of pizza sticks - which contained 5% ham - were cooked but the majority were not eaten.
Coun Dave Hollings, executive member for education at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: "I understand children at the school, including Muslim youngsters, were given pizza sticks that contained ham.
"The school is now looking to see if further measures can be introduced to make sure this type of thing does not happen again and would like to apologise to the youngsters and their parents who have been upset by this isolated incident."<!-- E BO -->
