Police guards on football trains
Police are to accompany travelling football fans on trains this weekend
A large police presence is planned for the region's rail routes in a bid to deter trouble from rival football fans.
British Transport Police have expressed worries about thousands of football supporters on trains this weekend.
Fans from West Ham and Portsmouth will travel on the same routes through Essex for matches against Norwich and Ipswich in the FA Cup.
The police failed in a bid to persuade the FA to move one game to Sunday as it would cause fixture clutter.
Officials said the request was turned down because they "ran out of options" in trying to satisfy police requirements across the whole country and also the needs of clubs taking part.
In East Anglia, there will be an increased police presence on the route from London's Liverpool Street station.
Concern over fixtures
Engineering works on Saturday will cause additional problems because it will close a section of the track, forcing all the supporters onto replacement bus services.
Portsmouth supporters have been urged not to travel to Ipswich by train, although British Transport Police insist that advice was given to the club because of the "severe disruption" expected and not as a way of avoiding potential flashpoints.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: "There were a number of games we asked about and the authorities changed some of them but they ran out of options in the end.
"We did express concern over these fixtures. This isn't ideal but we have got an operation planned. There will be travelling officers on all the trains and buses. "We are not anticipating any major problems, but it is a concern."
