Default What mod could this be?

Where you stick the disk in the drive, close it and game boots. Occasionally you'll have to open the drive again and close it.

Is that normal for an internal mod? Or could it be a soft mod?

Sorry for scant info - trying to find out from someone what type of mod their box has

could be any mod as you can set that in most dashboards. probably an old version of evox where it was set as default so probably an old chip.. maybe xecuter 1.1 maybe older

only thing i have ever had to do differently with a older mod was renaming the dashboard .xbe file to xboxdash.xbe its not really a problem but older mods would only recognise that name and couldn't be re-flashed

Edit.. Some of the first chips needed a media patch on the disk to make them play games. Mookie would be able to tell you more about that

Cheers mate, this is what the person said....who unfortunately knows as much about xbox modding as me

I'm not sure which chip to be honest, all the person said was that he had flashed it which involved opening it up and soldering something I think, it can be reversed.
To play backups put disc in close drive and it boots automatically once the drive has been closed, occasionally you have to open the drive again and close it but i'm told thats because of the way it was modded.

if he says he soldered something then flashed it, then it sounds like hes flashed the onboard bios.

Not sure about the opening of the tray tho

Why not just open the xbox up and have a look? If you are still unsure post some piccies of the chip here. If there is no chip he, like Freaky said, has flashed the onboard bios (or the thing is soft modded)

I think the bit about the soldering may have been wrong....

As I said...there is someone in this world that knows less about xboxes than me
