Default Ripping DV Video To Disk At A Decent Size

I have 7 mini DV tapes to rip from a video camera to my hard disk for editing. I cant do it all at DV quality cos it's 18GB per tape. Thus I’ve hit a snag. Premier only rips as DV (as far as I can see) so my only other option is to use Windows Media maker (Blerg) to rip the tapes, but the best quality that will go to is a 320 X 240 wmv...crap!

Does anyone know of a bit of software that will rip the footage from the DV camera, encode and compress at a decent quality and a reasonable size that wont make my ass hurt.

I am aware that I could rip each tape separately with premier at DV quality then compress it to something more reasonable later...but there must be a faster better way.

    Any thoughts?

use premier mate, it will compress just as much as any other application, if not more. Have a look at the output settings of it, I would open mine up but i'm riding on using all my memory st the money with other apps so I cant open mine.

Premier will export and compress using any codec you have available, and gives you the codec's settings for each. You'll have much more freedom than WMM

If you want to digitize, edit and encode DV video you'll need at least the 18GB or whatever size your tapes are, othwerwise you'll not physically be able to do all the tape in one go. I would either fee up the space, buy hardware or go use another PC.

If it's professional I can give you the details of a company based in Bristol which can digitise for you at competitive rates, but we're talking about a lot of money, you'd be better off just getting some additional hardware.

hope that begins to clarify some of it, I am not a pro but I am exposed to video production in my work.

edit: i might be talking out my arse...hang on...

edit2: ok just spoke to someone who knows more than me. you'll want to check your ratio settings, try changing the ratio when you digitize the footage into the PC, this changes the quality so you need less space.

    Pinnacle always done me well...

Newer version will rip at preview quality for editing, then only rip the needed bits when you render the final project. Hard disk space will be needed anyway.

Hard disk prices the way they are, you may as well just by an extra 80gb drive.

The thing with the disk space restrictions is that I dont have time to review and edit all 7 tapes before I need to hand them back to the owner. I am well aware that premier can encode as WMV and the other popular formats but thats only at the end of the editing process. Or at least I would have to rip each tape one by one then encode them as somthing else which will take some time...I guess what I am after is the moon on a stick.

Your best bet then is to borrow someones DVD Recorder that has a DV in. Record all the tapes to DVD and re-rip/edit them when you can be bothered. You will lose some quality, but should be a quick easy option.

There is also Windows Movie Maker v2. Ooooohhh! Dunno if it will do anything better tho...

    320x240 is actually VHS quality.

Both Adobe Premiere & Pinaccle will only capture at true DV quality (not a lot of point in doing it otherwise).
If space is a premium, then do one tape at a time.
