Default '95 Clio headlights not working

The headlights on my 1995 Clio (Mk1 Phase 2) suddenly stopped working on the way home the other day. That includes dipped beam, high beam and side lights (all in the same bulb, H4) The back lights, breaks and indicators all work fine though. I've checked the fuse box under the glove box and the fuse box under the bonnet, I've tried brand new bulbs too. Nothing seems to work so I'm guessing it's a deeper electrical fault as I seem to recall my head unit turning itself off intermittedly on the same journey. Any ideas what may be the cause? I'm not very technicaly savvy with car electrics but I'm willing to get my hands dirty if it's a simple procedure. If not, how much could this potentially set me back cash wise from the local cowboys?

    Thanks in advance

Is there a fuse for headlamp fuse?

Look in your manual or there might be an diagram on the fuse box cover of what fuse does what.

Yes that fuse is under the glove box, under the bonnet are the 2 fuses for each headlight, one for dipped beam and one for high beam respectivly. I've checked them and swapped them round with working fuses but still nothing.

Could be that the've lost an earth somewhere, that or the switch could be knackered or has a dodgy connection.

Hmm, I know what you mean urbsy. I had murder trying to start the engine earlier, it was turning over but it felt as if there was not enough power to kick it into action. Once it got going it I couldn't rev the engine and it just burbled and died. Got it going eventually but I was just kangarooing down the street as the fuel didnt feel like it was being pumped into the engine, though I highly doubt it's a fuel pump problem. I'm pretty certain it's all connected to the problem with the lights and the head unit turning off. So yeah, I think the electrics are knackered.

i dont know much about clios but there should be a heavy earth cable coming from the battery to the chassis or engine block ( or both ) check that it is clean and tight as this can cause all sorts of shitty problems with the electrics
