Default Learning how to do Hard Drive Data Recovery?

Pretty sad I know but I'm interested in learning more about this and what tools hardware software etc would be needed to be able to offer the service. Yet I can't really find any information on the subject other than people selling there service...

Any ideas courses books hardware or software that I should be considering?

    Cheers,

for starters i think you need a proper sealed room for opening the drives. They can open up the disk and remove the platter. This can then be fitted into a new case and the data lifted.

I had a drive go once and looked into it. It's expensive to a single user but I guess for a big corp. its nothig if data is lost. There is various software about to help restore files, i had great success with easy recovery pro. I think the HD has to be working first for most items.

Good luck, I reckon there's good money to be made if you get all the right kit!

Encase Data Forensics is your daddy, but that is going to set you back the best part of £2000. If you are not that rich, then go for Easy Recovery Pro which is around £300.

Both of the above are software solutions only, which means that the HDD you are recovering has to be in a working state (ie, detected at hardware level by the machine it is connected to).

If you want to go in to "intrusive" recovery, then that is going to involve "tea & biscuits with the bank manager".

Cheers for all the info guys... For starters in not really interested in doing the intrusive recovery due to the need for a costly clean room.

The route I was thinking about taking was purchasing a PC-3000 board from these guys (ht*p://www.acelaboratory.com/pc3000.htm) and buying a pretty fast machine with a couple of fat HDrives for recovering the data too. My main problem is that I don't want to buy this board only to discover a week later that there's something else that's much better and faster at doing the same task. It seems hard to find the hardware needed. It might be because thats all thats available but I doubt it?

I've been looking at Encase Data Forensics (thanks for that mate) and it seems like quality software - I'm in the process of tracking down a copy so I can try before I buy Just to learn the processes etc. as I've never really done this type of work before.

What spec. PC do you think I should be considering for starters guys?

    Cheers again,

If I were you Devs, here's what I'd personally do (from a financial point of view)....

Forget the PCI card for the time being.
Obtain both Easy Recovery Pro & Encase Data Forensics
Plug your "target" hard disk in to your machine as a slave
Try both bits of software and see what you like best
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

Cheers for the link DJAd I’ll have a read now

Yeah Pegasus I will do that... I'm just trying to get all my options out in front of me, so I know everything that’s possible and available.

Plus I think if I do kick this off as a business I we need to get the PC3000 and learn how to use it well. As I wouldn't even be able to access some drive with the software.

    Cheers
