Buy a new PC and make sure its got warranty you`ll be fine, windows or apple.

Apple tends to be more of a targeted machine IMHO (designers, editors, writers) and you`ll fine stuff (software and hardware) is more expensive for the Apple.

Pc`s are fine and to be honest, most of what you need can be downloaded if you know where to get it...saying that, I guess this may be true of macs as well.

Oh, and Macs generally look nicer!

apple machines work well, work quickly and work forever. Things just work, no messing about. Apple machines from as long ago as 2001 can still run everything released today and at a very decent speed. There is less upgrading cos less upgrading is required. The trade off is expensive hardware and if it's your thing, limited gaming support. A poll in here will always be heavily biased cos 99% of the voters will have never used an apple machine for any length of time. I have and they are wonderful, imho

In my opinion both platforms have their benefits depending on what you want. With macs making the transition to Intel hardware these differences may become less and less.

The main tangible difference I can see to the mainstream user is the software and price.

A comparable Apple machine is usually more costly than a PC. However, Apple has a good selection of software free for many different uses. This possibly offsets the savings made by buying a pc if you then have to pay for more software (assuming you pay for the software ).

Me personally - I would buy the PC hardware (it's what you are going to end up getting in future macs anyway) as it is more economical to upgrade and you are more likely to be able to install cutting edge components (e.g. mac support is traditionally far behind with respect to graphics cards). The macs may look all pretty but so can PCs - at least this way you can control over how your rig looks and not just another mac.

If it is the Apple OS that is the appeal then OSx86 makes dual booting Windows and the apple OS a distinct possibility.
