    Default Memory types

    Sorry guys and gals, I don't understand the different memory classifications that there are.

    My mobo can take this apparently:

    - DDR 266 Max. 3GB
    - DDR 333 Max. 2GB
    - DDR 400 Max. 1GB
    - DDR 3 x DDR, DDR400/333/266

    What does this mean exactly, and how does it relate to PC2100, PC2700 etc?

    I have 2x256Mb PC2700, and want 1Gb RAM. What do I need to do, what's best etc?

    Many thanks

    ok.....

    DDR266 = PC2100
    DDR333 = PC2700
    DDR400 = PC3200

    but what's the difference?

    ddr333 etc is the speed at which the ram operates
    when it says max beside it it means that's the max mem you can use at that speed

    Reet, from what I've read, 400 aint much better than 333, so if I buy myself 512Mb DDR333 and stick it in my third memory slot, along with the 2x256 sticks, then jobs a good 'un

    Or am I better off getting 2x512Mb sticks or a 1Gb stick?

    Any difference in performance?

    400 is better doesnt matter by how much just get it the difference in price isnt worth it. Does your MOBO support Dual Channel? As this can give quite an increase in performance! Also dont go for absolute shite quality no name ram, you dont have to buy Corsair, OCZ or Kingston but just not the shite.
    If you can run dual channel then getting a factory matched pair is hte way to go. So....................
    If its single Channel go for this. http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Product...9&GroupID=1116
    If it can run Dual Channel the go for these.....http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Product...2&GroupID=1116

    The lower the latency the better..theoretically. Those OCZ Pair are Cas 2.5 Latencey thats good providing your Mobo can run em at that if not they will still run fine a a higher rate.

    In fact even if it cant run dual channel I would go for the OCZ Pair.

    Cheers dude.

    My mobo's bus speed is 333MHz, so I'll stick with DDR333, right?

    No dual channel (mobo coupla years old now http://www.asrock.com/product/K7S8X.htm )

    Does it make any difference having 2x512Mb or 1Gb?, other than tidiness? I'm guessing having 2x256 & 512Mb aint a great idea.....

    No it doesn't but it all just runs at the slower speed.

    correct the mobo will default to the lower of the 2 speeds but as billy says there are certain boards that I have had that didint like it at all and just wouldnt post but the are mostly very bad boards
    Flumperino you said in your original post htat your mobo could support DDR 400 so you should use that mate if you can. Even if for some reason it didnt support PC3200 it would just run at the next slowest rate anyway mate.

    i know lots of people who have done this and myself included and have had conflicts and memory errors due to mixed ram timings

    It is something I try to instill into friends buying kit that even though something seems to be unjustifiable if it dearer but provides a similar function that the increase in lifespan and resellability of the part pays for itself.
