    Help What Processor

I have an Acer Travelmate 4021Lmi and it was supposed to have an intel centrino 1.6 GHz (it was meant to be an intel 725) but i opened the back of the laptop to see if it was soldered to the board or not (for upgrading later on) The actual processor had the following printed on it:

    RH80356 730
    7515A089 SL86G

    1.6/2M/533
    Intel (m) (c) '04

Now does this mean that it is actually an Intel 730 with 2mb cache and runs at 533mhz, rather than what was meant to be in it (Intel 725 running at 400mhz)

if so do i get a new processor that runs at 533mhz such as the 760 (2.0GHz) rather than the similar speed 755 running at 400mhz?

Thanks if i get any replies

Yes indeed it does appear that you have a 730 rather than a 725. Pretty good result if you ask me.

If you want to double check try cpu-z >HERE<.

As for upgrading, assuming the motherboard supports it, the 760 would be the better choice over the 755.

downloaded CPUZ and ran it. shows i have a 730

That means i require a processor that uses 533MHz? and that a 400MHz cpu wont work?

Does anyone know what the maximum CPU is that i could use. i was thinking of getting a 770 (2.13GHz) or even the 780 (2.26GHz)

I found a web site advertising my laptop and it says it comes with either a 725,730,740,750,760,770, plus higher

does this mean my laptop can take a 770?

    the site is http://www.bixnet.com/travelmate4020.html

    thanks

Intel 915 chipset that the motherboard uses should support either 400 or 533, you can always have a look inthe bios, it might have the option - ie, you could run the processor you have just now at 400MHz if the setting is there. This would obviously lose you some MHz but would prove it works.

I would say if it is advertised then it is likely that you would be fine with a 770. The only thing you usually have to thin about is whether the mothboard bios supports the chip. As the latest bios release appears to have been on 26/01/06 it's likely to be bang up to date with the latest processor support. See here http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers...k/tm_4020.html. Might be a good idea to ask Acer what processors the 3A41 bios supports.

I don't suppose when you had it open that there was anything identifying what motherboard it was?

only opened the slot where the processor and fan was stored. couldnt see any markings on the board from there. I rang up Acer and emailed them about processor support and all they would say was 'only an intel Centrino 725 has been tested in the Acer Travelmate 4021LMi and therefore other processors may work, but have not ben tested by us'

dont know what bios is on this system (just been in for a hard drive repair so i hope they put the new version on it.if not i will flash it myself.

great news about the laptop being upgradable. was a bit worried that the processor might have been soldered on the board

    Forgot to ask.

Downloaded the new bios and in the zip there are 2 bios files as follows:

Production version of M/B BIOS: 3A41 for TravelMate 4020 and AS 1650
1.L3223A41.wph is for ATI M22 sku
    2.ZL3I3A41.wph is for UMA sku

    which one do i use?
How can i be sure what one i need to flash?

I really need help here. my bios version is mid 2005 and i want to reflash it with an up-to-date version that is more stable

Just had a bit of an idea. are the 2 different bios for different graphics drivers? if so how do i find out what one to use?

    Yup, you're right.

The M22 is ATI's X300 integrated graphics on the Radeon Express 200 chipset.

The UMA appears to be interchangeable with GMA, as in the GMA 900 Integrated graphics on the Intel i915 chipset. This is the one you will have. If you want to make doubly sure then the second tab on CPU-Z should give you motherboard chipset information.

I'm betting it will confirm yours as i915.

You would think that Acer would make things a bit easier for their customers to understand though!

Just flashed it and my laptop is dead.

The fan starts, the lights flicker, hard drive sounds like it is working, but nothing on the screen - just black.

is there anyway to reset the bios (i.e. remove the cmos battery)

or should i return it and say it just stopped working on me?

    thanks.

    PLEASE HELP

**EDIT** just found out that if i press the FN and ESC button whilst i boot up i get 1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps that repeate over and over again.

ANy way to fix it myself?
