    Default wireless internet

Just set up my laptop and desktop to a wireless router and encrypted my network everything is working fine. however when i have my router switched off i keep connecting automatically to someone else's network near by who has no encryption and i can surf the INTERNET no problem. is there any way of being traced or tracked by doing this?

It won't be hard for him to trace you.

His Router will list your Host Name and Mac address. Which may or may not give you away for instance if your PC name is your first name the neighbour may know this.

But also you have to make sure you have no shared drives as he will be able to view these and maybe even make changes.

His router IP should be something like

192.168.1.1 ? - you can go there and once you know the make of the router go to the makersd website and download the manual, if your lucky he will be using the default username and password.
You will then be able to log into the router and see what info is held about the connected hosts including yourself.

    cheers for the replies,
would he still be able to access my shared drives even though my network is wep encrypted ?
i was thinking along the same lines as Cam & Raggovibes, especially as his (SSID) is called thankgoditworks.
Not that i intend to use his network of course.

i think they mean he could access your shared stuff because youd be connected to his network.

he could only connect to yer lappy if you connect to his router. he cant connect to you because your router is encrypted. and he couldnt connect to your lappy without you either insitgating it or having the settings do it automatically... i think.

Unless of course he has a little sense and uses Backtrack then he can access your encrypted network aswell.

Everyone should beware their neighbours especially if you download a fair amount of stuff as the more traffic the quicker the crack is.

I have changed my SSID and encryption since so hopefully that wont happen, and i have changed the settings on my network adapters not to automatically connect to any available network so when my router is switched off i don't connect to the Internet through his network. think i will ask around to find out who it is and do my neighbourly duty and tell them to sort it out because i honestly don't think they realise.
    Thanks for the info.......
