we went there last summer mate while on holiday in florida..New York is fantastic!..
we stayed at The Hampton Inn - Manhattan North, just a block away from Times Square & Theatre District etc..great price for the location (we booked with the hotel direct)..ignore the 2 star rating, it had just been refurbed when we stayed (was called The Howard Johnson) and was more like three or four star!..well our room and service was! breakfast ain't up to much but it's new york..EAT OUT!..special bus transfers fom the airport cheapest and easiest and they drop off and pick u up outside your hotel..
here's some info on the hotel..
stay as long as you can there mate cause it's huge..u'll need a a good 3 or 4 days there..HTML Code:http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d93457-Reviews-Howard_Johnson_Plaza_Hotel_New_York-New_York_City_New_York.html
cheers
I'll see if I can dig out more info when I get home..
Museum of Modern Art is magnificent, Empire State building is great, and as you are taking the Missus, you gotta go to Macy's and Bloomingdales . And for somewhenre nice to drink and watch some sport try Deweys bar in the Flatiron district on 5th avenue (near Madison Avenue). this is their website http://www.deweysflatiron.com/deweys.html
It is a great place, many a night I have been in there and not remembered leaving
You also need to try SOHO and Greenich village for some great little bars and resteraunts and wierd arty type shops etc.... Basically in my opinion NYC is the best coty in the world, enjoy it and I am certain you will go back again and again,.
A good place to try staying is the Madison hotel (Cheap, and only 10 mins walk from time square) http://www.madison-hotel.com/index.htm
Enjoy mate it is a great place

just found some pics..first is hotel room...like I said about a block away from Times Square and cheap!
just some teasers...night time pic quality ain't good..but it's high at the top of the Empire State Building and gets a bit shaky...believe me!
We paid about £200(between us) for two nights in a business king standard room as above..all usual stuff..safe/tv etc..price for our location was good..
there's so many places you could recommend to visit..rockerfella centre..empire state at night!..statue of liberty..grand central station..etc..I'd say get there..spend some time planning in a bar and just head off!..great city..probably the best in the world..
hope that helps ya
