Sony DVD Writer

Hey Guys,,,
Bought this:

and installed it on my PC, with a Nero 7 I acquired and installed at the same time. I copied a cd fine, but it doesn't seem to want to work with DVDs.
At first it would not recognise the blank DVD-R, but now it recognises the blank DVD-R and automatically gets the right speed for the disk, but when it comes to burning the disk it says Illegal Disc!

Anyone got any ideas what it might be?

Sony only reccommend certain DVD's i.e. the most expensive types. I have an older version and I have to stick to Ridisc Ritek G04 dye x4 speed, but I am finding them harder to find.
