Newbie Looking to buy a new motherboard

First off, let me provide some links

Link to detailed current CPU info

Link to deteailed current Mobo info

Both results courtesy of SiSoft Sandra Lite.

I currently have an ATI Radeon 9000 128Mb 4x AGP video card. I decided that since it's chugging along when I play FFXI, and I saw they're up to 512Mb, I'd at least upgrade to a 256Mb card. So last night, I bought a XFX GeForce 6200 8x AGP.

Honestly I wasn't even sure my mobo supports 8x. And then, my friend links me to this SAPPHIRE 100142L Radeon X1300 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card.

The problem is, while I'm not positive that my current mobo has 8x AGP, I am positive it doesn't have PCI-E.

BUT.... it made me interested in upgrading my mobo. Problem is, I have no idea how to do that as I've never done it. I know enough that I'd get a better mobo and put the CPU I've got on it, but beyond that, I'm not clear. Like how to tell what I've got (found it's a Socket 478, Model # 8IPE1000-G), and then how do I know from there what's compatible to upgrade it...

I also think my current mobo doesn't support 8x AGP, from glancing over the two linked text files above that contain a lot of data I don't quite understand...

Which basically prompts a mobo overhaul anyways.

So, with the CPU that I have, and the 512 video card, what kind of mobo should I be looking for? Where's a good place to shop for one? Can anyone recommend any mobos?

Thank you and I appreciate your help.

PS - If by chance posting external links is taboo, I apologize and request the links merely be removed rather than the thread deleted.

Why not just have a look here.

States quite clearly that you are capable of 8x AGP. You don't have PCI Express and a 16x AGP card would merely tun at 8x anyway.

As the forum is mainly UK based I doubt that we could offer you much help on where to buy stuff cheap but I would suggest New Egg as being reasonable.

dont think you can get a socket 478 with pci-e,so you either go for a new agp card or a complete rebuild

Sorry about the weak topic title.... I fixed it.

    Thanks for the link, bertroot.

What about a new motherboard that could house my CPU that also includes PCI-E though?

There is one but it uses the radeon chipset so could prove problematic with nvidia cards but would be fine with the x1300 his friend pointed out to him...one other thing its a micro atx mobo
