    Default Car Tax

I need to pick a car up that we have bought for the Mrs but it has no tax on it. What is the score here? If I get tax for it today will I only get 5 days worth of tax out of this month and then the other 5 months on the disc or do I get six months starting on the 1st May?

I was thinking of picking up the car on Saturday after 12 which means I can't get to the Post Office to tax it till Tuesday following the Bank Holiday. Where do I stand? Is the car road legal as I couldn't tax it due to the time it was bought or what?

As you may have gathered I know fook all about road tax.

Can someone tell me how to do this?

Hmmm I think you used to be able to Tax a car 2 weeks in advance. Try having a word with your local Post Office ?

    CAR TAX
In what circumstances do I have to display a tax disc?
Any ‘mechanically propelled’ vehicle when used or kept on a public road must display a valid tax disc.

    Are there any exemptions?
The following vehicles are exempt from displaying tax discs:

    Fire engines
    Ambulances
    Some agricultural vehicles
    Electrically propelled vehicles
    Invalid carriages
    Road construction vehicles
Vehicles used solely for spreading material to deal with frost, ice and snow.

Vehicles are also exempt ONLY when:
Going to a test centre for a pre-booked MOT, stipulating the time and date
    On an MOT test
After failing an MOT test, for the purpose of taking the vehicle to a pre- booked appointment at a garage to have the faults rectified.
Note: Some old vehicles may be classed as vintage vehicles and although they are not exempt from having to display a tax disc, the disc is free of charge.

My car tax is about to expire and I have not received my insurance certificate. The Post Office will not issue me with a new road fund licence. Can you make a record that I have rung so I can drive the car until I get a new tax disc?
No, you cannot drive a car without a current road fund licence

My road fund licence ran out last night. Can I drive it for 14 days until I get another one?
No. There is no 14 day ‘grace’ – you must have a valid road fund licence.

Legally you cannot use it on a public road.

Personally, there is no way I'd lose a month over 5 days.
If you were to use it for 5 days on a public road while untaxed, it is only a civil offence and I doubt you'd get caught so long as you stick to the speed limit as the old bill have been replaced by PC Gatso.

I will be getting the damn thing on Saturday which makes it 2.5 days before I can physically tax the bastard anyway. They should make it more favourable to the British public by offering half months or even weekly periods. Er oh hang on would that be something done by the government in our favour? Sheesh yeah so it ain't gonna fucking happen.

All depends where you live mate, Around this area I wouldn't risk it for love nor money as they always out doing stop check camera thingies..

That being said, if it's only 2.5 days you could just pick the car up just before it gets dark get it home and don't drive it further until it's taxed.

Still a risk, but a limited one

Pointless as if he was going to get caught it would more than likely be on a DVLA based camera system where they check the plate via the road tax database and if you've not got a valid disc you get stopped further up the road/motorway by the plod.

Not to mention not having road tax for 2 days and faking a tax disc (ie fraud) are two entirely different things and not to go down.

Having no tax is a piss ant fine, getting done for fraud on top could result in a jail sentence.

Had no car for three weeks now and am getting frigging cabin fever. Seem to be doing an inordiante amount of DIY on the house as well which I am sure is very nice but I need to leave the Fylde Coast before I gun down the old fuckers who live in this sleepy seaside hell hole.

    Ha ha, spot on mate.

Sounds like (the risk of) a small fine would be the lesser of two evils!

Had an idea here. What about borrowing a trade plate off a mate who has a garage? Would that cover me?

It would distract you from being pulled by the cops and/or the vosa cameras..

But it wouldn't be 100% legal, for that you'd have to be put on the company insurance aswell.

But it's def the best solution thus far.

I would check you are insured to drive the vehicle, and make sure your policy has no exclusions about road tax or anything like that because i remember coppers nicking me and charging me with no ins rather than let me produce cos the top copper at the station was in a mood, and at court all sorts of little details could matter, 6-9 points for no ins - not good.

But I suppose it all depends how many coppers, especially traffic coppers (they got automatic number plate reading machines that clock you if papers are missing for the car) near you. If answer is loads like here, I would definitely say no. Thats up to you to decide.
