When is this competition going to go back to a photo competition?

I stopped entering when you allowed photoshop as I don't have it or use it or want to use it and my photos with my Kodak z740 won't hold up against an enhanced Canon EOS or whatever it's called.

I know that not all the pictures are fixed but be honest, what's the point of entering anymore?

Good point, the best guy/burd at using photo shop will win instead of the best photographer.
off course you could make a separate section for enhanced pics and one for regular ones.

although i cah see your point lin, almost every photo thats pubished today goes through photoshop. its a basic photographers tool nowadays and we wouldnt get the same results without it.
A bad photo is still a bad photo no matter how much pshopping it gets, the basic rules of composition, lighting etc are still very important.

MY second attept in this months compo has had some hammer through photoshop, but this is the first time ive converted a photo to black and white using it, i was a complete novice and i had to google to find a tutorial.

But this is a forum for normal people isn't it? Or is it a photographer's stage?

It's a photograph competition, not a photoshop competition and I'm sorry but the photo should stand or fall on its own merits, not by what frame you add or what tweaks you make. It's unfair already by allowing people who are studying photography to compete with rank amateurs, why not make this what it really is - a showcase. It isn't a competition in the truest sense as people will vote for what looks best, not taking in to account the merits of the camera and the skill level of the person using it.

The best photo I can take with my Kodak will never match up to the worst one taken on a professional camera after it has been played with (or even before)
Me and my fella spit our dummies out so we won't be coming back. ever. boo hoo.

    Lin makes some valid points.

Can we get the original and the shopped images being entered? Same crop of course but could give people an idea what has gone into production. Maybe a timeframe for the time spent on production?

I see Lins point but as {{909}} says, it's a basic photographers tool nowadays, I mostly use it to adjust the brightness/contrast more than anything. It's all just a bit of fun at the end of the day though.

But you are missing the point here, is this a competition for photographs or photographers?

I have a camera and I don't use Photoshop, so what does that make me? I am ineligible to enter a photo competition on a forum I enjoyed because I don't "cheat" with my pictures.
It isn't fun when you submit a photo and someone else tweaks theirs and makes it better than it was, if your photo isn't good enough to stand up on its own then it isn't a good photo, is it? It's a good tweak, that's the difference.
Either rename the competition or change the rules because they are two different things.

yeah it is, im a normal person too! although alot may argue that. My camera isnt anything flash, it was £200, photoshop is "free" and so was the tutorial i found, its nothing that the average normal person isnt capable of.

if we have to seperate the psop users from the non pshop users, then we would have to seperate the people who are using expensive lens and filters from those of us that are using cheap digi cameras.

Grab photoshop lin and give it a whirl, its daunting at first but with a few tutorials you can soon be doing impressive stuff with it.

Using Pshop is purely a matter of taste, the first picture i entered has no work done on it other than cropping it. the second one does, im still not sure which one ill enter.

At a size of 800x600, the camera used to take the photo is largely immaterial, if you think a DSLR somehow magically takes better pictures than other cameras then you're mistaken.

If you think that photoshop can somehow magically polish a turd then you're also mistaken.

If you don't want to learn how to use an image editing program that's up to you, if you don't want to learn how to use your camera to the best of it's abilities that's up to you, if you don't want to learn the basic rules of composition, lighting etc etc that makes a good picture then again that's up to you, but don't start whining when others do learn, simply because you feel it's unfair.

As for letting someone who's studying photography enter, how many times has wingnut won ? Once.

Maybe we should also stop WRATH OF BOD from entering as well because he's won it twice.

The competition stays as it is, if you don't like it don't enter, don't vote, don't have anything to do with it.

But I don't want to, I want to take photos, not be an image editor, why can nobody grasp the point I am making here?
