It's a form of viral marketing. The internet is a very powerful advertising tool. If you can get people to spread a link that has your advertising it holds greater credibility having been passed on through a confidant and therefore is more likely to be viewed. Likewise you are more likely to spread it as part of your participation in what you think is a funny lad's joke.

I assume the sites linked there or at least some of them are paying the owner. Call me cynical but he requests that people don't keep hitting the page to get the counter up. I reckon that's cuz it's just hits on his server and not clicks on the advertising. The links aren't reference linked mind but there's still ways to do that.
