Default Fun fun fun on the AutoBahn...

Right, my world cup preperations are all but complete now. I am flying to Dusseldorf on the 09/06 staying there, then driving to Frankfurt the following morning to see England v Paraguy.

The journey I will have to drive is along a road called the A2. I am hoping this is a AutoBahn and I am looking forward to giving me hire car (a Focus) a good run to get to the game asap.

I read somewhere that there are local limits that we will try to stick to, but is the rest of it no speed limits?

i dont know about that particular road but i seem to remember seeing something a bit back (perhaps on top gear) that said the german police are cracking down on speeding because they are fed up of people coming from other countries to test the autobahns and driving like idiots. just a warning

I've driven a lot in Germany and there are still some sections with a 'free speed' limit(A2 being one of them) but they are becoming far and few between. If you want to boot it you will have to choose you section of road wisely. The free speed zones are marked like our national speed limits signs but they tend to only run for a few miles at a time as they are trying to faze them out. Be very, very carefull at high speed as trucks have a tendency to pull out with little or no warning. I would recommend going for something like BMW or Merc as they can handle it better than a Focus will. I've clocked my fastest speed at 168mph....and at that speed it's fookin scary especialy if something pulls out in front of you 300 meters ahead of you.....not recommended for any length of time as it frys your brain.
    Good luck!

Its a shame I have to get a hire car as my BMW would of loved a run out on these roads.
I think we will probably opt for a C class as a hire car, probably built a bit better for speed.

    Cheers for the tips guys.
