The 35 year-old Australian, who was due to be part of his country's FIFA World Cup finals squad, has a blood clot and a narrowed artety and he will now undergo surgery to correct the problem.

"Six months ago I was on top of the world and now my world has collapsed," Vidmar told UEFA's official website.

"Going to the World Cup was always my goal, but I was told that to keep on playing could be fatal. I have a girlfriend and two kids, and I want to be there when they grow up. In the short term it is very disappointing but there is more to life for me."

Vidmar was playing in Holland for NAC Breda.
