friends pc internet and ie problems

hi

my mate keeps asking me how to fix his pc, basicaly hes got bt broadband and when he clicks connects it just sits there on connecting and sometimes does connect but then ie takes forever to load a page and then normally the internet randomly disconnects, its started happening about a week back, hes got xp, i cant realli get to his pc so i cant really check much else on it, is this a common problem, spyware? etc


oh and bdw have askd him to do a virus scan and nothing has come up

is he connecting thru a router or just a modem , if its the modem get him to plug it into a different usb port , the drivers will then reload and may sort it . also if he has a telephone extension to the modem try and get him to plug it straight into the main telelphone point ... and try a different filter

yes hes using straight modem, ahh ill check ask him to do that to see if it works thanks

Is it an adsl or dial up modem?

would get him to download and run spybot search and destroy - is free also switch from ie to firefox

Often such disconnections can be caused by a poor signal on the line if possible try to find out the noise margin, line attenuation and/or SNR (signal to noise ratio) through the modem, this is usually found on the modem setup page in internet explorer. (there should be an overiew or broadband line section look for anything measured in Dbs) BT are constantly upgrading exchanges and connection speeds sometimes they upgrade the connection speed too much that the quality of the line is not sufficient to support the speeds. www.dslreports.com/faq/691 for more info on line noise.

Has he just had his line upgraded? as this is happening to me

I went through a nightmare when I upgraded from 1mb to "8mb max" (even tho they could only give me 3mb due to the line)

7 weeks to get it sorted.......... it went live and a I got 3mb d/l speeds 300 kb/s from a newsgroup, I use it for 24hrs........ then it died,speeds of 25kb/s if I was lucky.

must of rang BT 20 times trying to get it sorted and told a pack of lies about exchanges needing work, jobs being booked etc

The helpdesk in India was a nightmare........ 20 mins of troubleshooting everytime "Please delete temp internet files, delete cookies etc" every fecking time I rang.

Went straight to the Chief Execs complaints team who in the end sorted it.

My line was too unstable so they downgraded me back to 1mb (140 kb/s downloads) and £60 compo

Get your m8 to go to BT`s broadband speed tester. See what his speed is like............. failing that...... kick off like mad at BT....... tell them your going to OTELO (the office of telecommunications people) and they throw money at you

he could also try clicking on repair in connection properties
this cleans out many cached files such as dns etc.
helps speed up sometimes
