    Default Google Talk

The forum description says 'Google Talk The new IM and VoIP client from Google - sure to be a winner !' - do you think it will be a winner?

The IM aspect of GT will surely never beat the mass of MSN Messengers out there already. As much as I'd like to seethe ad splattered MSN Messenger be shoved aside by a superior IM client but I fear it may be a similar case to the Firefox vs MS Internet Explorer.

msn/yh/aol etc etc... the major difference is they are all propriatery and use closed networks.

gtalk is based on jabber (xmpp) and as such is an open protocol and they encourage federation of chat networks. add to that sip based voip, and theyve got a good thing going... if only people werent sheep and saw the benefits of an open protocol based client over fucking animated smileys and bloat.

also if you use gmail, the integration is excellent, you can chat just through logging into gmail which is really really nicely done, and better than any of msn's web-based chat solutions.

Good point about xmpp - I hadn't realised that.

I use gmail (which again is far superior to Hotmail) and the chat integration is an innovative and useful idea.

I didn't like it at first mainly, I'm sad to say, because it's not like MSN Messenger.

Spend some time with it, and appreciated that it is in its infancy.

Does anyone know if it planned to add GoogleTalk to the DF public profile settings?

Can you use Googlamail to chat to MSN/Yahoo contacts?

I have not really used it much, but it makes sense for me to as I always have a Gmail window open.

Using Google you can only talk to Open Communications Services, which as marcode suggests above include many 'smaller' clients. This does not include MSN, Yahoo, AIM which use a closed network.

Have a look here for more info - http://www.google.com/talk/otherclients.html

Personally I find Trillian pretty good for using instead of MSN cak, plus it lets you logon to MSN, Yahho, AOl and ICQ at once but each to their own, I'll get round to grabbing this one sometime when i remember one evening and see how it goes,
