Help Recommend me a small general use camera please

    Hi everyone,

I'm after a camera i can take on family days out when i dont want to lug the 350D around with me. Like something i can take to funfairs and stuff, which can still take great pics (and ideally have some decent apperture control) but i can fit in my pocket or wife's handbag without having to get a carry case for the thing?

Can anyone please recommend a decently priced and good camera to fit the bill please?

    Thanks

I've just taken delivery of a Canon IXUS 60, small as you like and kicks out some great pictures. I got a PC Pro as it had a compact camera round up. IXUS 60 came out trumps so I got a purchase. Been well happy with results.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, ooh one thing I would really like on the camera though is an optical viewfinder, I just can't get to grips with having to use just an LCD to take shots, not essential but a nice to have.

I've got the Ricoh R3 - unfort' it has no optical view finder but has a great sized LCD screen. The camera itself is tiny for what it does. Most impressive feature to me is the battery - it takes 2 AAs or supplied rechargeable - it lasts for ages, on this occasion around 3 months with light use 3-4 times a week.

    Have a closer look - http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=2050

Mine has been as reliable and a reallt reliable thing. Even tho I've dropped it several times. I've had a few Sonys brake with a 1/4 of the wear.

    Highly recommend it.

Been doing some digging around and i'm tempted by this one atm, with the exception that it dont have an optical vf, i really love that it's shock + waterproof, ideal for when i'm down the beach with the kids

I wouldn't worry too much about an optical viewfinder. On ultra compacts they're usually so small as to be practically useless anyway.

Bought the Panasonic DMC FX01 for my missus for her birthday last week for £209.00 incle delivery. Upgraded to the Sandisk 1GB card for £50.

I did my homework and the guy on this site rates it highly. It's a lot smaller than it looks on their site. Actually bought it from UK Digital Cameras but the price seems to have gone down on other sites this week

dont really wanna pay much more than £200, that FX01 looks nice, but at the moment, the waterproof and shock resistant olympus is winning it for me, only problem with that one is it uses xD cards, and i've got stacks of miniSD/SD/CF cards about i'd rather use

Can you tell me if you can charge the battery in-camera at all with the FX01? or do you have to take the battery out to charge it every time?

    Thanks

Apologies for taking so long to reply. Unfortunately you do have to take the battery out and use a desktop charger for it. The battery life is very good though as we used it at my brothers wedding this weekend and it lasted very well including people reviewing all the photos we took at breakfast on the Sunday.

It has a "Simple Mode" which turns it into almost a Fisher Price camera, which is a nice feature, especially for the missus
Give me a day or two(still recovering from the weekend) and I'll post up a few pics that we took so you can see the quality etc.

Cheers for the inco roachy, it's a shame it doesnt charge internally, i'm still undecided on a came atm (not going on hols for a few weeks yet) it's between the waterproof WP10, the Olympus 720W and the non-waterproof FX01. I hear te FX01 has much ebtter picture quality, so it's a trade off between pic qual and being able to thras the camera about at the beach

Well I got my Olympus 720w this morning, and of course first test, was to put it in te bath with some bath toys

Not bad really considering where it is Will be an ideal bash about and take to teh beach camera (drop-proof too up to 5ft so can give it to the kids to play with)

    thumbs up from me
