People Watching at Torrey Pines City Beach

Cropped to 38% of the original height and width, we are concentrating our view on the fliers and the glider port.

After a third 38% crop, we notice a cluster of people in the right third of this view. What are they doing?

Cropping to 38% once again, we see just 2% of the width and height of the original image. It would take a 50x50 mosaic of images at this resolution to rebuild the original shown at the top of this page. Studying this small part of the original image we can see that the man at the upper right is looking down toward the beach through binoculars. But what of the three at the lower left?

One more 38% crop gets us close to 1:1 with the scanned Gigapxl digital image. It is now clear what is going on. One person with a telescope or long lens and two with binoculars, all looking downward. Each of them has a head covering as though settled in for a long stay. What is so interesting?
As it happens this beach, also known as Black's Beach, is a clothing-optional area for San Diego naturists!
These are people watching; specifically people using binoculars and telescopes to watch a beach full of naked people. (Though not shown here, the little dots on the beach in the first image are well defined cherubs in the Gigapxl image.)
