Depends what you want to use them for really, do you just want basic ones or are you looking for ones with a bit more like CTCSS etc? PMR446 are the ones to go for as they are licence free.
Just for a guide
http://www.kcb.co.uk/shop2/
Scroll down on the left and click on PMR446
I also wanted about the same distance, I found the PMR 500mW just couldnt get further than a mile or so in our built up area.
In the end I got some 5 Watt ones from the USA.. like this..
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-23KM...QQcmdZViewItem
These got the extra distance on our housing estate, but, they are illegal to use in the UK..
They have 22 channels on them, I have had mine for 2 years, and have yet to hear a different voice on them. So the frequencies are not that busy!
Tony.
just search fleabay for some cheep back to back hand helds most are on 446 and set at 5watts or you can get them programed on a loacal general freq that is used as a temp one untill the proper one is allocated no on will ask any questions as long as you don't missuse it
may be able to lay my hands on some for you but won't know till tuesday
cheers ian

Yeah id sugest going for a couple of pmr radios as there free to air and you dont need a licence to use them , as for makes and prices they can vary , not to sure whats the best make to buy , another option is to buy a 2meter 70cm handset and open it up to transmit on pmr then you get a good 5watts of transmitting power which should cover a good range
thanks for info guys

Hi there, Just a warning 144 mhz & 70cms two way radios are reserved for amateur radio use only. You Must obtain a amateur radio licience before you can operate these radios. The local amateur radio operators will report all ilegal operation very fast.I am a fully licienced radio ham operator so be warned.
Sorry a few amateurs have a problem understanding the licience requirements. Or maby they are using the equipment without a licience? it happens
Just read about licence requirements being relaxed a bit, ie, no more requirement to keep a log book
quote from the rsgb website
"As previously reported, Ofcom has substantially revised the amateur radio license terms and conditions. Changes include abolishing the need to maintain a log book, allowing amateurs to operate a station by remote control, substantial alterations to emergency operations and the recognition of a number of additional user services. It will also no longer be mandatory to identify operation with /P, /M or /MM, but the alternative address suffix /A has been re-introduced."
also
"mateur radio licenses will be issued free after 1 October, in accordance with the regulator’s earlier promise."
