    Help Buying A Laptop

    Hey guys,

Im a student just going into 2nd year and i need to get a laptop for next year, could anyone advise me on a decent laptop below £700.
I dont really know what specs i'll need, but relatively fast.

Also i might use it for a bit of gaming aswell, football manager, half life 2, doom 3etc. So i would like it to run these comfortably(however not totally necessary!).

Am i right in assuming pretty much all laptops have wireless connection these days?

Any deals coming with software would be handy, microsoft word internet explorer etc.

    Any help much appreciated

    Hello,

I can't specify a model for you. But nowadays, laptops are getting cheaper and cheaper.

Games like half life 2 needs a PC or laptop with a good video card.

Wireless is almost integrated into all the produced laptops.

I can suggest for you Acer laptops with non-integrated vga card. I saw one with 1.6Ghz + an ATI card an about 600 pounds. But the CPU is not a Core Due. Just the old Pentium Mobile CPU.

Maybe the gaming concern should make you rise the budget a little bit more.

I hope that someone else can suggest a specific model for you.
Also you should know that an included OS CD like WinXP Pro is part from the deal. So you may avoid laptops that come with WinXP Pro and look for laptops that come with WinXP home edition CD instead for better price. XP Pro is almost 2X the price of the home edition.

    Best Regards.

nonononononono stay way clear of acer - I've heard of and seen loads of faults with them

have a look at asus they make sonys laptops and I think toshibas as well

but yes if you want to play games your budget might have to stretch a bit and look for non integrated video and pref 1gb ram

check out the dell outlet store for deals. Toshiba also make nice lappys. Buy the manufacturers extended warranty for 3 years - min cost to fix a lappy is £250 no matter what the prob, so odds are you will break even.

Or buy through J Lewis and get their 5 year warranty. Unliely the lappy will last that long, so you get a 'free' replacement.

Stay well away of ACER!!!! Just read my post in the Legal forum abouut them if you aint sure lol! The worst after sales you are ever likely to get! Got myself a Dell XPS laptop now, and couldn't be happier. Dell's budget models are also good value, used two and was very impressed with both.

Wouldnt write off Acer....Not the most robust machines but if you look after it, it should do the job. I however did send mine back and the after sales service seemed to be satisfactory. Much better than Fujitsu Siements. As i have seen tho many people have had much worse experiences than me
