Saw a panasonic day/night camera in operation the other day at a friends house. The quality was great. He told me they were very expensive, but he got a good deal from a guy on ebay.
He also showed me another camera [not panasonic] with IR LEDs surrounding the sensor, this was a waste of time. Sorry I cant give you the name of it, but it looks like you need to get a quality camera.

Not quite sure how it does it, but as the ambient light falls, you could see the picture flip to black & white and the sensitivity increase.
It was by no means 'see in the dark', as flood lights are recommended for detail.

I've got a couple of cameras with IR leds connected to a dvr card in pc and the quality is pretty good, especially for the money. Just make sure you buy CCD not CMOS.

A good bit of software I've used to go with the cctv camera is icatcher, you can do all kinds with it. I set up masks so it only triggered when it caught movement withing the area specified - stopped false triggers as a result of wind blowing the tree near the camera!

    Thanks for the replies folks.
Hoponbaby, Is it good enough to pick out a face as this is the way I'd like to go and whats it like in total darkness.
Ramtec, I like that idea but would like to get a Dvr recorder instead of using the computer. Seen a few that have movement control built in.

    Many thanks

Depends on the range really, can clearly read numberplates.

It was good enough for me to give the woman who's dog had shit on the path outside my house a bollocking and she certainly didn't deny it when I produced the picture.

Of course it isn't as clear in total darkness but it's still not bad.

we do ones in work that record onto a hard disc and can be viewed from home or wherever theres an internet conection, the camera quality varies with the record mode selected and type of camera used but generally its excellent.
