Help Canon L Lenses, do they work on 1.6x and full-frame canon DSLR?

    Hi all,

I'm in the market for a new lens at the moment, and looking to get a decent L range one with IS on it. Now what i am worried about after looking at some lenses is that some say they only work on the 1.6x frame ones and won't work on the full-frame range.

As I really want a little bit of future-proofing, i.e perhaps upgrade to a 5D or something in the future will the L range canon lenses work properly with my current 350D and later on a full-frame Canon DSLR?

    Thanks

The only Canon lenses I know of that are specifically designed for the smaller sensors are the EF-S range, which afaik doesn't include any of the current L lenses. All the rest will work equally well on either full frame or cropped sensor.

5D, nice camera, I'd love one of them just for the larger viewfinder.

That's gret, thanks as always Slarti, so i'd have no problem in using an EF lens on my 350D in the meantime either then, i.e i dont *have* to use an EF-S with my 350D? Is there any disadvantage to using an EF over an EF-S with a 350D or other 1.6x frame ?

    thanks

No, you can use the entire Canon range with the 350D. There's no advantage or disadvantage to using either EF or EF-S.

The only restrictions are with using EF-S lenses on full frame and older 1.6 models.

There's currently only 5 EF-S lenses available and they're mainly restricted to wide angle lenses because that's the problem area with 1.6x crop factors.

    EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
    EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
    EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
    EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
    EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM
