    Default Free partition making software?

Hi, quick question - does anybody know of a good free (or "free") piece of hard disk partitioning software that runs in windows? I want to partition an existing drive (80 gig down to a 60 and a 20 so I can test Vista RC1 on the 20 gig partition). The machine I am using is a laptop (HP nc8430 running XP Pro) - it has no floppy drive, and I've tried various boot CD-based utilities, but I get numerous errors, from a corrupt screen to not being able to find the HD!

The only one I can think of is Acronis Disk Director, but when I try and install the trial version it won't get past the registration screen, it asks me to try again later?

Any help would be greatly appreciated - it's doing my nut in now, all I want to do is lop 20 gig off the end of a drive! Thanks in advance!

cheers fella, I gave it a try but I can't see the option to create a new partition on an existing drive, only to recover a partition?

You're both lucky I'm in a good mood or you'd be moaning about the 'Infraction' you would have got from me.

When I said "free" I meant trial or demo versions obviously! The recover-me-tools I installed, I only used the trial version of it!

Cheers, I had a look there, they are all boot CD-based ones, which don't seem to like my laptop drive!

I installed a works copy of partition magic 8, it lets me set all the parameters I want etc, then asks to reboot. When I reboot it doesn't bring up Partition Magic to finish it off! I hope Vista is worth all this hassle...

I have now given up.. nothing I tried would recognise my drive. I've now flattened the machine and put Vista RC1 on it as the sole OS. Very swish it is too!

yeah it had the same problem.. in windows, it would let me resize the partition, then it would need a reboot to carry it out. When it rebooted, it wouldn't find the disk. I updated it with a patch from the official site, and installed the API drivers that they recommended too, but still no joy.
